Finally!! 1967s Robbery available on a viewable
dvd for us yanks!! Great movie about the great mail train robbery of 1963. It’s a fictionalized version but fantastic none the less. Suspenseful, wildly entertaining, best car chase scene ever!! Nothing like a British crime! ,except a great movie about it!!

James K. Stewart

When will this brilliant British crime film be released on dvd? With a
great contemporary jazzy soundtrack and tight, gripping direction and
night-location shooting by Peter Yates, this is one of the best heist
caper films ever made. Intelligent, serious, and well-paced, it also
has one of the best car chases ever filmed (before "Bullitt" and by the
same director). I've loved this movie since I first saw it back in the
late 60's. I have a VHS copy, but this needs to be on dvd, with special
features. A great, cool film and a British 60's classic. DVD please!

Update: I now have a Sampo multi-region dvd player, which will play pal
region 2 format dvd's. Also, recently picked up the UK region 2 pal dvd
version of "Robbery", which was released in 2008. There are no special
features included on the dvd, nor is it in widescreen format (which would
have been great), but I'm just glad to FINALLY have this fantastic movie
in my collection on dvd now. The aspect ratio is 1.33:1 (4.3), and the
picture quality is just fine. I consider this film by the late Peter Yates
to be a masterpiece. In addition, I also have added the fabulous sound-
track (available as a cd import) to my collection; the great Scottish jazz
composer and big band leader Johnny Keating did the score and, for me,
it contributes tremendously to the film's excitement, suspence, and dra-
ma. "Robbery" also was a winner of Best British Original Screenplay by
The Writers Guild of Great Britain. Solid gold and a time capsule from a
long-gone era. They don't make them like this anymore.

I checked and was surprised that the release year was 2017. Lau must be in his 60's. Shu Qi can't possibly play the lead young girl. But there they were. Lau is actually just 59 I checked. He isn't surprising because the James Bonds act into their old age, possibly 60's. Tom Cruise is 58 and seems like he had a long way to go if the box offices allow him.

Shu is surprising because I watched another movie 10 years older than this one. She was still flaunting her body then conservatively. So how come she can still play the leading young girl after 10 or more years? I looked her up and she is legendary. She was born in Taiwan, moved to Hong Kong at 17 to start her career in adult movies (not porn). So it's really surprising to see her so successful as a mainstream actress at 44! Playing young seductive roles!! She was in recent years the highest-paid actress in Taiwan and rank very high among Chinese celebrities according to Forbes. She must have overtaken the lifetime achievements of Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia (in her 60's now) always playing the good girl. Shu won some Asian awards and she can sing too.

It's a heist movie. The stealing is non-stop and so is the action. The budget is beyond adequate with the long list of financing Chinese companies. Helicopters, parachutes, car chases, car racks, the large number of temps. As an unusual move, they even have the detective played by an A-lister, at least in France. The high-tech gadgets are convincing.

But somehow I'm not too much into it. Maybe it's too linear? The director is telling the story at a steady pace. The thieves have impossible problems and then they solve them. The director seems to be afraid that any audience will get lost. There were no big surprises, no big twists. The plot is solid though.

The theme of the human side of the story is betrayal. It does make the movie better.

I am curious about the target audience. It couldn't be targeting the foreign box offices because how popular can it be when audiences have to read subtitles all the time? For the same reason, why pick a story that the French policeman has a significant role? But I don't really look at the subtitle much because ... it's an action movie.

The movie is certainly made in France, possibly a bit in the Czech and Ukraine. Are foreign locations and some foreign actors attractive to Chinese moviegoers?

The other thing is that Lau is Hong Kongese and Shu is Taiwanese. They and many others are popular in China as soon as the Chinese box office became decent. But after so many years, China has the money and people to make great movies. Can they find Chinese to play these roles?

When we talk about representation, we're really talking how Hollywood is hopelessly out of touch with the real wide world that is happily missing Bradley Cooper, Matt Damon depending the Great Wall, and whoever else comes to the parochial American mind. This is a good heist movie with strong lead actors, a decent plot, great cinematography, and several very cool twists in the last 30 minutes, and Andy Lau. What's not to like about Andy Lau?

There are a few clunky bits, maybe about 10 minutes in total, when they try to explicate character; but really, who cares? The leads are great, especially Shu Qi as the tough, smart "Red," and gorgeous Tony Yang as the anomalously chiseled, handsome tech guy. I'd take off one star for Jingchu Zhang's horribly wooden acting as the ex-fiancee, but I'd have to put the star back for cosmopolitanism.

One minute you'll be raising one eyebrow at dirt bike riders doing jumps (side to side) in the midst of a forest chase! And the next minute you'll be laughing and rewinding a clip or two because it was so funny! Enjoyable movie for sure!

Story, acting, sets, wardrobe, everything was done the way it should be. Copy THIS Hollyweird and you might have a hit. The last 10 movies I tried watching on Amazon Prime weren't worth the bother! This was VERY enertaining! I wish Amazon Prime would dump their garbage movies and provide more quality shows like this.

Sean Connery at his peak. Donald Sutherland leading a strong supporting cast. Simple fun for the average viewer. Interesting for history buffs. Michael Crichton telling a compelling story, without the unlimited budget of Jurassic Park. The action is the reason to watch it, the humor and innuendo take it to another level.

This is a British Butch & Sundance – just a little bit smuttier.

A fun movie. My teens laughed.

The movie is well made, to say the least.

It is very entertaining if one knows what entertainment means.
Sometimes it is the actors and acting which makes a good, great movie. Sometimes it is the script and writers involved.
This brings both. I highly recommend it.

On a personal note, I would like to Thank You Very Much Sir Michael Caine for your kind words, acted with utter sincerity and professionalism. I am 43 years old, I have seen many movies insofar, You Sir stand out in many of them. Your persona will echo throughout motion picture history as one of the best actors to grace our wide open faces.

With deepest respect and best regards,
- A Polish man.

Tongue in cheek bank heist for British seniors. Most of the time I was laughing but I admit there were many times I was scratching my head trying to keep track of the plot. For those of us that enjoy watching a gang of masterful character actors at play (work?) and don't mind being baffled (in a fun way) by a movie's clever plotting and editing don't miss this. It would be a shame to let the bad reviews make you pass this by.

TZ

You get exactly what you'd expect in a good bank heist flick. I especially enjoyed the soundtrack. I love the scene with all the safety deposit boxes getting pried open: makes you wonder what really is in all the safety deposit boxes- documents? heirlooms? gems? gold? Yes, yes, yes and yes.

The almost five minute introduction into the movie ( even though awesome song pick!) was a bit too much so I fast forwarded it. ( Sorry! )

The actors were excellent! I can feel everyone’s emotions and the acting was on top of it. I actually wanted to jump in there with an inhaler and give it to that poor girl. Josie has asthma and she’s had ones like this, ones that turned into panic attacks, triggered by stress. Also, if I worked in a restaurant like that I’d probably quit. Wait- I did work in a restaurant like that and did quit.

The story line was great. It kept me entertained from beginning to end.

I actually am one of those people that reads others reviews and this one person was complaining about the quality of film. For an Indie Film, and I’ve seen a few, on a lower budget ( because not everyone has a stack of hundreds ready to burn) it was well made. I didn’t mind some of the “quirks” because it’s like playing records on an old player , listening to a worn out audio tape, it wasn’t really a nuisance. It gave it that extra something special because it showed that they worked with what they had, many hours, and still came up on top.

I absolutely love that there is someone local on Amazon!

All in all- plot twists, great acting, good story line, familiarity...

I liked it.

Go watch it for yourself !

This Rollercoaster of a film had me suprised at every turn. The story keeps you wondering what will happen next.
Derek Babb did an amazing job of making you feel his emotions.
Lara Jean Sullivan, Bishop Stevens and Tiffani Fest along with the rest of the cast gave a captivating performance.
The way the film is shot throws you into the whirlwind that is Payday.
With a skilled cast and crew I highly recomend this movie and I definitely will watch this again.

Starling Roberts

A movie that pulls you in and doesn't let go. Gripping characters with problems you feel compassionate about from the start. Intriguing and smart. Love the feel of this film--gritty and urban while also realistic. Highly recommend!

I enjoyed the telling of the most infamous bank robbery in British history to date. If you like British crime movies and TV shows, you will like this one. There is quite a bit of nudity, and you should expect hardened characters to sound like, well, hardened criminals, corrupt cops and the like, but it demonstrates the sleazy side of the background story. I first rented it, then I decided to buy it as it looks like the kind of story one could watch again in a couple of years.

Dave

For an enjoyable, fast-moving heist film, this nicely fits the bill. The story's a tad bit predictable at times, but not enough to keep it from being satisfying overall. The 1970's setting and some really authentic production design are icing on the cake.

Amazon Customer

This is a real world story without a fairy-tale ending. The story has excitement and intrigue.

What to Consider for robbery movies
