I planted at the end of April when the temp was in the upper 60s low 70s and watered it every day for 7 days. The before and after pix were taken on day 14.

Let me start by saying my wife thinks you always have to look at the amazon one star reviews before buying something. On this case I disagree. I think most (not all) 1 star reviews came from people that didn’t read the directions.

The directions are simple but the 3rd step is most important: 1. rake the area to loosen ground soil, 2. Pour out the ez seed (I recommend almost an inch deep in bare areas), 3, numero tres, do this or die, WATER IT. And I mean water it. Three times a day is great, two will work. Treat it like a baby who needs diapers changed. It doesn’t cry! There’s no poop! It’s easier than a baby! In fact if you have babies, this is better, it’s an excuse to go outside and quietly water the lawn by yourself in silence!

I’m going to post some pictures at some point, I’m on my third go around (in different areas). And twice now this season I’ve had good results in week, great results in two to three weeks (watering watering watering until week three).

Sun and shade, though obviously sun needs more water. I’ve only done it in northern California grass growing season: April through October. I’ve used it to cover dog pee spots up to 12” wide and also clear weird invasive grass spots up to 3 or 5 feet wide in odd shapes.

Please feel free to ask questions, but there are only three steps here..

I have lacrosse players and dogs and this stuff is amazing. My yard looked like a abandoned lot before this and it literally "grew anywhere" just like it said. The bag I planted last year actually came back strong this year so I put more down and it is working like a dream!

2. Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass, Grass Seed Sun and Shade Mix for Full, Green Grass in Weeks, 5.6 lbs.

Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass, Grass Seed Sun and Shade Mix for Full, Green Grass in Weeks, 5.6 lbs.

  • Enjoy a new lawn in just weeks with Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass Sun & Shade Mix; grows up to 2x times faster than seed alone when applied at the newlawn rate (subject to proper care)
  • Unique, proprietary combination of sun and shade mix of seed and fertilizer results in full green grass that grows in just weeks; expect to see grass growing at a minimum of 12 days and maximum of 21 days
  • This sun and shade grass seed and fertilizer combination will change the way you grow grass; it’s the most complete solution for large problem areas in your lawn and for establishing new grass
  • Fall and Spring are the best times to plant grass seed; seed germinates best when temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F and the chance of frost has passed
  • For best results, rake soil lightly to remove debris; apply grass seed with a Scotts spreader, then water daily or as needed to keep soil surface moist until the seedlings reach 2 to 3 inches tall

This stuff grows incredibly fast compared to other grass seeds. I purchased the Scott’s seed with soil spot filler stuff at the same time and planted it at the same time and this seed was already 2”+ before the other even began to show.

I recently moved into a new house and the yard was mostly dirt with some patches here and there. I used one 16 pound bag of the rapid grass about two weeks ago and I am amazed at how much grass is already growing in the yard! I imagine I will need at least one more bag to get full coverage, but I will be tackling bare spots, rather than seeding the entire yard like it did this time.

I highly recommend this product.

3/7/2022 I'm still pumped about the growth! Think I may need another bag just to fill in some spots, but I'm happy! Grass is growing where I didn't even think grass would grow, lol.

Still watching. Have blades popping up in
areas where grass never existed. It's not all coming up evenly, but it is coming. Bought some of those aerator boot ties, stomped around the yard, seed then just raked afterwards. I'm no lawn guru so don't follow any instructions I give. I'll be honest and say I haven't been watering super consistently and I may have did it too soon because we had a few more frosts after I did it. Somehow I'm still seeing growth.

I bought this for $35 last month which was a steal for how well it worked. Please note you can't just dump this and hope for baby Jesus to make your grass better. Here is what I did and now I have the best yard in all of Kentucky.

- Dethatch with power rake and rake up into trash
- core aerate (rent both for $150) and local place
- spread lawn soil or compost on entire yard and rake in with back of rake.
- spread this seed stuff and use back of rake to cover
- put down milorganite very liberally
- hand water twice daily

Boom!!! Perfect yard.

I like a decent lawn but am not going to go crazy seeding, weeding, liming, etc...and my lawn reflects that. My mantra is usually "if it's green, it's grass" and I cut it. As a result, the lawn looks okay but can often be thin, sometimes kind of brittle to walk upon, and only light green in color.

There are some things I will try occasionally in the spring to improve its look but not much...and I only do it then. The lawn is pretty much on its own after that. Have neither the time nor the inclination to care for the lawn continuously throughout the season.

That being said, I tried the turf builder this spring in the front yard and on the right side of the house, areas which can be thin, weedy and even threadbare. I did put down a little extra grass seed as well, and I mean a little, and watered with a sprinkler every other day for about 7-10 days.

Well, I am so pleased with the results that I am writing this review and have told others. This turf builder has made a noticeable difference in the look and feel of my lawn. There are fewer weeds, it is more lush, more green and it looks healthier. In fact, I can honestly say it looks the best it has ever looked since I moved to this house 15 years ago.

A telltale sign of the turf builder's effectiveness is the untreated part of my lawn. I can actually see the difference between the treated and untreated areas. The treated area is noticeably darker green and fuller, with the grass growing taller. I am just sorry I did not do the whole lawn. It is on my calendar to do that next spring.

As another reviewer has written, don't give up on this too quickly. You need to give it about 2-3 weeks and water it a bit in the beginning. I do hope anyone who uses this product has as much success with it as I have had, and with such relatively little effort.

ADDENDUM - 7/23/2019: During the Fall of 2018 I decided to use this on the entire lawn. Bought four 40 lb. bags and mixed in some more grass seed. Laid it all down in late September hoping for the best in the Spring. Well, I was not disappointed.

At first, it did not seem to make much difference. As it got into May and June, though, I noticed an overall improvement even in very shaded areas which had previously had little grass and sometimes moss. With such encouragement from my lawn, I will probably do the same this Fall, likely adding a couple more bags.

One thing, I did water much of it for about an hour a day for a week. I have a half acre (about 75% lawn, the rest trees and large shrubs). It was kind of a pain to keep moving the sprinklers, and my water bill shot up for one cycle, but I felt the hydration was necessary and worth it.

Thats Me

This has been the only lawn fertilizer that has delivered- I had a huge bald spot and could never get it to grow. This was easy to apply and saw a huge difference in just two weeks!!

I had a very patchy backyard. It is shaded and one side had almost no grass. My husband has tried to get grass to grow there for the last few years with no luck. He tried serval products and most didn't result in any grass growth and the few products that did initially produce grass it would end up dying right after the first mowing. My husband gave up on it and said it was a waste of money and time to keep trying. I decided to buy this product and give it one last try. I scratched the surface with a rake, put this product down, and watered it daily for the first week or so. That was it and now I have 90% grass coverage on what was virtually all dirt. It is great! I bought a second bag to fill in the remaining patches. So far it has been a few months and several mows and it is still going strong. I bought a 2nd bag to fill in the remaining patches. If you have areas where it seems grass will not grow this is the product for you!

I had a huge spot on my lawn that just had no grass anymore, high traffic, lots of kids playing ,digging, snacking, etc. So I tilled the earth and laid this patch master out. I followed the directions to a T. Lots of watering to keep it moist at all times and in 2 weeks this is what our yard looks like now. There’s a large period of time where the sun shines directly on this spot of land so it would dry out the patchmaster quickly. I had to water at least 5/6 times a day, but with diligence the outcome is evident.

I originally bought a small bag from Home Depot and it worked wonders on the hard to grow spots in my front yard around my bushes and retaining walls. I decided to check amazon and found a 10 lb bag for $19.36 which was cheaper than home depot at the time. I have no complaints! Worked in the backyard around my locust tree and grew within a week of where my dogs always pee. I highly recommend this product being used with their sun and shade grass seed mix too as it adds more seedlings for an even better turnout. Currently amazon raised their price so it's cheaper at lowes @ $19.36 but this product is fantastic!

The proof is in the photos!!! I basically gambled on this product and WOW I did no fancy prep... no fancy tools... just raked the dirt a little, spread the seed by hand, watered religiously, then fed with Scott’s recommended grass feed... I HAVE GRASS! I used to have solid dry packed in dirt that flooded when it rained... planted April 10th in NC, ( against all advice from my neighbors haha)

Mid July in Minnesota climate. I decided to completely reseed my existing lawn by using a grass and weed killer to kill my existing lawn . I sprayed first week of July. Two weeks later rented a sod cutter to completely remove the grass and tilled the soil. By August first I used Scotts Heat Tolerant seed with some 10-10-10 starter fertilizer.. I applied seed and gently raked it into the soil . I watered it using my irrigation system 3X a day for short periods to keep the seed wet. I did not use any commercialized cover to keep the seed from drying out. By the end of the growing season ( end of Sept) only 50% germination. Over the winter I was concerned my hard work was no going to show my results. In April the lawn showed some improvement, but my Mid May, the reseeded lawn was completely covered with a lush green carpet of grass and no weeds. I did not apply a pre emergent crab grass fertilizer as that would kill any seed that had not germinated . By mid May the results paid off with no weeds and a golf course like appearance. Germination is slow. For a new lawn, I spent $50 on this bag of seed, $25 for grass killer, rented a sod cutter to remove the dead grass, and own my own tiller. For less than $150 and the cost of watering, I have 5000 sq foot front lawn vs $1000 of high maintenance sod that requires constant watering, fertilizer and herbicides. My hope is the product which says is heat tolerant fescue (no bluegrass which I do not want) so I do not need to water in the July and August saving $ on irrigation and maintenance. If you live in Minnesota, this seed is hardy to withstand the winter and although not bluegrass, it looks like bluegrass and no one will know by looking at it or walking on it.

The bag has about 85% annual, 15% perennial.

It recommends watering twice a day, with germination as soon as 4 days.

I watered once a day, and got little grass sprouts in 48 hours.

Best grass seed I've ever used.

I really do not have a green thumb and have came to hate doing yard work. I'm not lazy, I really just don't care about grass. Well my HOA said I need to care about grass. 2 passive aggressive letters later, I was forced to do something about my brown blades in the front yard. I bought this seed hoping for the best.

After watering heavily for a month (by heavily, I doubled my water bill), this stuff worked like a charm. Now HOA will be off my back until this stuff dies again. I will definitely be (forced into) buying this again!

This seedcame in very quickly. Just three weeks and it was green. I raked the soil threw down seed watered and the birds came. I threw down more seed and some straw with tack and watered 4 times a day for 5 minutes. The picture shows it all.

I'm not one to review but after reading so many terrible ones I needed to show the product works. First picture is day 1 second is day 9 and 3rd is day 14. Still seeing new growth everyday was easy to use the key is follow the directions and water 3 times a day like it says. Happy with our results.

Three weeks and grass!!!! Love this product! Super easy and no till. Just spray and pray lol

It's so effective that some tiny remnants inside the applicator bottle grew grass. The challenge is to keep moist. I applied during this hot Georgia Summer. I'd suggest using Spring or Fall.

I like the idea of a self-sustaining lawn for a number of reasons:

1. Less chemically dependent.
2. Drinking water safe; as we get our domestic water from an aquifer below us.
3. Potential cost savings as a result of less or no “organic” fertilizer or herbicides used.
4. Being on the forefront of a new concept in what a suburban lawn can be.
5. Children, pet, and adult friendly because we hopefully won’t have to add herbicides or fertilizer .

My pre-seed prep:

Hand aerated after rain
Rented power rake
Seeded w Scott's drop seeder on setting six...enough for two passes plus some extra for bare spots- I have a typical 60x100 suburban property
Top dressed with peat moss
Cheated w starter fertilizer
Fingers crossed

I’ll update with additional pictures and change my rating after a few weeks after the seed has enough time to grow.

I hope this review was helpful.

Happy gardening.

Grew Within two weeks of planting. I live in northwest suburb of Phoenix Arizona, planted March 1. To plant, I mowed down existing perennial ryegrass as low as it would go, covered it with a light dusting of garden soil purple bag from Walmart, put down the seed, then covered it with a light coating of steer manure, then covered it with a light coating of peetmoss. Used reflective tape and just strung across the lawn all over the place to keep the birds off. I set my irrigation system to water for 7 minutes every 6 hours. and violà.

Not sure why so many negative comments. This grew quickly. Its quality seed. I put it down in poor soil with sun and shad. I watered it 2xs a day for 2 weeks. The picture is the growth in less that 20 days.
I made a silly mistake. Somehow I believed it was just clover. I didn't pay attention the the bag description. So farr it appears to look like Beautiful grass and little clover. That may change as it grows.

First, it's important to realize that it's generally difficult to seed grass. This product makes it much easier and is the best all in one seed/mulch product that I have ever used. I've used it multiple times, in both sun and shade, and it comes up strong. As the directions say, the "key to success is a good initial soak" to the point that the soil beneath it is also moist. Use a sprinkler. Plant in the early spring before it gets too hot and dry. As always when seeding grass, you must never let this product dry out until after grass emerges. The mulch in this product does seem to cover the seeds and retain moisture quite well. To help minimize watering, I generally try to put it down in advance of predicted light showers, but be warned that a heavy rain will definitely wash it all away. Fescue should emerge in about a week. Let it get tall for good root development before mowing. My experience has been that bermuda is a bit slower and more difficult.

I will admit, I’m pretty impressed! I used this underneath a huge tree in my front lawn, not sure if it will make it with the lack of sun it receives, but it germinated way better than I expected! I’m so pumped now, because I can actually fill in all the dead spots around my tree! I also used this in other areas of my back lawn and it germinated just as well there too! Excited to continue to watch the process :D!

P.s (it’s also fun to watch the mulch expand on initial watering in 😅)

Love Scott's EZ seed, this stuff will grow on concrete if that's what you want. Won't use anything else, plus it's very affordable!

Forgot to take a before picture to show the entire area that was completely bare, but you can see some of it in the picture of my dog taken 4/23/22. Thanks to 3 boxers it’s been bare for a while, and got worse after 4/23. I finally purchased this 5/5/22, and the picture with grass is 5/31/22. Still have a few small bare spots, but that’s either human error, the near tornado winds the day after we put seeds down, or both, so I just purchased another bag. This worked so much faster than I expected, we’re in NC & our ground is hard & clay like. 3rd pic is 7/20/22 & 7/30/22 my dog has worked against the seeds to maintain a small patch of dirt to lay in..

This is an All-In-One for patching bald spots in your yard. It has grass seed, fertilizer, and mulch in the bag. Because of this, some settling of the grass seeds tends to occur. Turning the bag upside down a few times before opening it helped mix it up.

After pulling all the weeds, dandelions, and all non-grass from my little 10'x10' yard, I spread out the product on the bald spots, and then watered them. I was a little disappointed with how much coverage I got, thinking the 5 lb bag would go further. I watered 1st thing the next morning and manually de-clumped some of the mulch, spreading it for more even coverage. I kept up with the watering directions over the next 2 weeks but we received so much rain, I barely had to water at all before the grass started sprouting. All the treated spots started to grow and are now thick and lush, making the original grass look subpar! I purchased a 5 lb bag first and then a 10 lb bag after discovering how little the 5 pounder covered. The 10 lb, 2nd batch sprouted within 10 days again (says something about the consistency of their product) and is also thriving despite poor sunlight.

4 stars for Value because it seems like there is a LOT of mulch compared to the seeds. However, this stuff worked REALLY well for me, so I'd have given them 4.5 if possible. Also, 4 stars for easy to spread. I think the manual de-clumping of the mulch helped blend the types of grass, evened out the coverage, and sped things up a smidge.

I'll just keep ordering this stuff until it stops working or my yard is free from bald spots!

San Diego Sun Bleachers my lawn and the water here is treated with something the grass doesn't like. Three weeks before this it was brown and patchy. Especially for the price and the end results I will continue to buy.
