I'm not a HUGE coffee snob, but I did grow up in Seattle - and moved back a few years ago - so I don't often buy the "bargain" beans, and I always saw this brand as closer to that category than "gourmet." Well, I'm glad I gave it a try, because now I can't imagine spending twice - or three times! - as much, given the quality in this can.

I did a (VERY unofficial) taste test with three friends, and only one of them chose this as the "value brand" espresso, and only when we did the straight espresso shots, without any sugar. In all other ways (double espresso with a cube of sugar, double shot almond-milk latte, soy milk mocha, and triple shot Americano), they either couldn't tell the difference between this and they expensive brand, or they chose this one as better! (For anyone interested, we were testing/comparing this Lavazza espresso made in a Nespresso machine, using reusable stainless steel pods with the standard Nespresso espresso pods. In terms of price, using this espresso with the reusable pods is about 30% of the cost of the same number of Nespresso pods/shots.)


Love this coffee! So yummy! We use it in our regular coffee pot and it's the best coffee! My husband was getting really bad heart burn from Folgers (coffeehouse flavor), which we were drinking for years and the last month we've switched to Lavazza and his heartburn is gone! Plus this taste smoother and better than Folgers (which I actually liked but after trying this, I can't go back!)


I've been using Starbucks ground espresso for quite a while since I could get a lb bag on sale for around $7. But, after a while I got tired of the coffee really not tasting like espresso and not giving that real crema head. The Lavazza is more expensive but it does make a much better cup of espresso with a thick, foamy crema. It's worth the money to me to spend a little more.
I thing I had to watch out was not to pack the grounds as much as I did with the Starbucks ground. The Lavazza is much finer ground and when I packed it very firm my machine would not flow the water through the grounds. I guess my inexpensive machine does not have enough pressure.

After visiting Italy, my husband and I returned to the US very spoiled. We had tasted delicious espresso and did not want traditional coffee any longer. This brand was served by a ton of cafes over there and so we decided to try getting it here. Even with a super low end espresso maker (I bought it for 2$ at a garage sale...), it tastes delicious and brings back heavenly memories. It is very smooth and has a great flavor.


Born and raised in the Seattle area, I was used to all the Starbucks and Tully's roasts, and dozens of coffee stands and whatever coffee they use, and some boutique Hawaiian beans as well.... But this illy coffee... This stuff is real coffee, compared to anything else I've ever tasted.
illy smells and tastes absolutely fantastic. It's bold, aromatic and nutty. No bitterness. I find myself hardly adding any cream now. The cans are really cool too!

I got this mainly because i wanted to know how this grind looked and felt because I wasn't sure that I was grinding mine correctly. It was fresh and nicely vacuum packed. I also wanted it as a backup because my replacement hand operated coffee grinder had not arrived yet.
I live close to sea level like about 200' above sea level and I have read reviews on Amazon about the can blowing out the coffee grounds when they open it. I remember that at least 1 review was from someone at a higher elevation like in Colorado. I always read as many reviews for a product as I can before I order it, Amazon excels at that. I placed a new paper plate under the can to catch the coffee grounds if they came out. Then i put a new thin clear baggie over the top and I opened it very slowly. Nothing flew out. The baggie would have caught all of the grounds and/or diverted them down onto the new/clean paper plate. All the coffee stayed packed down inside of the can as I opened it.
My single can came with the screw on lid. I will keep the lid for later use as some reviewers said their cans didn't come with a lid. And YES I was able to order only 1 can!
I use a "3cup" Moka Pot and this grind seems almost right. It could be a little bit finer grind to get more richness out of the coffee but it works. The taste is as good as you can expect from coffee grounds in a can. There isn't much crema from this coffee in my Moka Pot. That actually doesn't matter much as I mostly make an Americana in the morning to make my Moka Pot coffee go a little further. A real espresso machine has more "bars". Read about those kind of "bars" before you buy an espresso making machine or a Moka Pot. I think this can of ground coffee is better suited for a real espresso machine than it is for a Moka Pot because i think it would produce more rich crema.
I hope that this review will help people with their decision to buy this coffee.
Over all i am glad that I bought this can. If you are in a location where you might run out of fresh coffee beans or electricity and you only have an electric powered coffee grinder, OR you use a real espresso machine this is a "Great stand by".

I use to drink Folger Columbian roast and when i found the Crema e Gusto i was in heaven and i dont espresso my coffee i put 4 heaping scoops in my cuisinart drip coffee maker useing a filter for 12 cups and it comes out dark and rich and flavourful . It's not bitter but fruity but i do add cream but when you add international delight cold stone creamer it is the best damn coffee period , every sip is just good . I would not bother making this review if it didn't really make a difference in drinking coffee , and if your stuck on Starbucks get unstuck .

Wow, I highly recommend this espresso. We’ve tried a few different espressos (Bustelo, Lavazza, Medaglia d Oro, Starbucks and illy) and this one is probably the best in my opinion based on value and flavor.

The crema-oh my the crema is unreal. Not much crema with the others we’ve tried so I immediately fell in love with my first cup of Gaviña. Bold and smooth and it works well with our Delonghi machine

Our old favorite was Lavazza Perfetto espresso but now we can only find it for drip coffee? Seems a little more bitter now. And flavor wise, the illy espresso is AMAZING. A dream. But also expensive!! So we searched for a comparable and luckily found this gem. I hope to continue buying this at a great deal on Amazon!

This superb Espresso brings me back to my Neapolitan Grandmother's kitchen, as well, to the Par Excellence Italian coffee parlors of New York City. This Espresso has a pleasing flavor, 'mouth filling', with NO bitterness. Better than 'GOLD MEDAL' (Meddalia D'Oro...)


I'd pretty much given up on trying to find a strong/not bitter coffee, but I came across Gaviña Espresso when I was trying to find a micro-ground coffee to use instead of instant (instant coffees gave me a kidney stone the size of my thumb, so I gave them up, pronto). So I gave it a chance based on a few of the reviewers saying it was basically bitter free, and they're right! I put it straight (not brewed) into my breakfast chocolate protein shake, and I get a healthy mocha. I put it straight into a Pyrex full of water, nuke it, and I've got a great cup of hot coffee too (there is sediment, but once you get to it, your cup's empty). Bravo Gaviña Espresso!

Coffee available today is dummied down and diluted. This is the Coffee I remember from my youth. It is rich, robust and actually works in the morning. Coffee available today is treated like a occasional and special beverage. That is just another way to rip off consumers. This stuff is great! I don't use an expresso maker. I make it auto drip. I highly recommend it. It stands up to sweetener, spices and heavy whipping cream, without tasting like a desert without any coffee in it! Not recommended for people born after 1979! Lol!

This coffee is 14 dollars at my local Starbucks for a pound (16 oz) This 20 oz bag is much less expensive and gets delivered to my front door. Enough said!


Bag had been opened and re-sealed. Not as full as every single bag I’ve ever bought! I squeezed bag and there was tons of ‘play’ that was nothing but air. Tape seal was even misplaced. I opened bag and and sat it on the countertop and gave it a quick shake to settle the grounds, and it was a full 1/4 bag shy! Not even CLOSE to being full. Last month I had bought the same size, flavor etc and it was completely full and packaged was rock solid it was so full. I’ll be purchasing it directly from Starbucks from here on out!

I've always enjoyed light-to-medium roast coffees with smooth, full-bodied flavor, but no bitterness or acid. It is a hard combination to find. Many light and medium roast coffees are lacking in flavor, or are acidic. Dark roasts are right out because of their burnt, bitter, over-roasted taste which covers up the coffee flavor itself.
Eight O'Clock Original Roast ground coffee fits the bill nicely, hitting all of my requirements. If you are looking for those same qualities (I find that many who grew up on the East Coast or in the Midwest enjoy that same diner/donut shop/restaurant style coffee), then you should also enjoy this Eight O'Clock Original Roast.
Other ground, bagged coffees with similar qualities are Gevalia Traditional or Columbia roasts, and Chock Full O' Nuts Original roast, if you want to try some others, as well. (Although, CFoN can be a little acidic.)

I like 8 o'clock coffee because when I think that life can't possibly get any better I open my cabinet to see the bright red bags glistening in the fluorescent light and my heart skips a beat, my legs get a little weak, and my mouth begins to salivate like one of Pavlov's dogs. It is like winning the lottery on a beautiful spring day. It is an example of all that is good in the world. The only thing that could make it better would be if one of the fine makers of this fabulous coffee came over each morning to brew it and serve it to me in bed, but last I checked that service is not yet available with Amazon Prime.


I was a lil scared at first, but I am loving this. EOC struck gold once again. And since I haven't seen this or the lovely Mocha Macchiato in stores, Amazon will become my official coffee supplier from now on.

Before I tell you my opinion about this coffee, let me warn you that I like very strong coffee. I am the type of person that enjoys drinking shots of espresso straight, with no milk and definitely no sugar. This coffee definitely delivered!

The bag states that this coffee was brewed with the taste of Latin people in mind, and if you have ever had Cuban coffee you know what this means! The coffee is strong but smooth at the same time, with a very pleasant bitter taste and no sourness at all. It creates a beautiful foam and fills your house with a delicious aroma. If you enjoy the experience of drinking a good cup of strong coffee, you will not regret trying La Llave. If you, however, prefer lighter roasts, or like coffee with flavorings, then you might want to keep on looking.

As others have said, this is strong coffee. I don't mind the robusta coffee beans; I have actually come to like them better than plain arabica coffee. Robusta has more of a "bite", plus more caffeine than arabica. I bought mine from Cuban Food Market here on Amazon. My pic has the expiration date. I got it in the mail today. The package came with a paper telling how to make Cuban style coffee.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Gran Crema is an EXCELLENT blend of coffee to make cappuccinos and lattes, producing an incredibly velvety crema. The espresso drinker who prefers a stronger taste and full body will also certainly enjoy this roast blend.

Tastes: If everyone had the same tastes and liked the same things, there would only be one coffee in the world. Finding the "perfect" coffee is a personal decision tailored by your own taste and likes, and even then, many times you want to have something different or change, therefore in finding YOUR perfect coffee, it depends on your present tastes and moods at that one particular moment in time...which can change. My best advice is follow your feelings and have a try at different things to find NOT what you like, but what you DEFINITELY do not like. And most certainly do not buy or force yourself to like something, because others do like it or love it. Buy for you, not for them.

Coffee basics: 2 types of beans. Arabica, which have a smoother taste in general but have lighter body and make less crema, and Robusto, which make more crema and have a stronger taste and body but carry more bitterness. Plants are grown in warmer climates all around the globe, and each place yields beans with distinct flavors regardless of the same bean used. The roasting of the coffee, different machines, water quality and grind quality also add to these differences. Tamping (espresso styles) and amount of coffee makes a very minimal difference compared to all the other factors, and everyone gets the hang of it with practice (i.e. no need to focus so much on pressures and exact weight and times). WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT: the WATER!, the quality of the coffee, the right grind for the style you are making (finer for espresso and Turkish, coarser for other styles), and a good machine for that style, which is NOT synonymous with expensive (stove tops are not). You get these 4 things right, and all the other factors won't matter much, and you will have an excellent coffee every time. The water here where I live is horrible, and so was my coffee, so I had to spend quite a lot on a filtration system for the water.

Italian coffee: Our preferred styles are espresso, cappuccino, and latte (it really means milk and the original Italian name is caffè e latte, but we have dropped the "e" over time) and all are served hot. In Italy, flavors/things added to these styles are only found in places where tourists are (i.e. no creams, cinnamon, iced, etc) and most Italians do not even consider or have heard of adding anything else, other than sugar. In Italian bars (this is what we call coffee shops in Italy and why they're called baristas) ALL coffee is a blend of arabica and robusta, making them versatile. ALL bars in Italy also use whole milk, typically what we call lunga conservazione which stores at room temperature until opened (hence less refrigeration storing space needed). You might find places that use more than just whole milk in tourist areas, but is not a certainty. Whole milk froths better than other milk. Coffee is quite important in Italy, so much that the price of coffee is strictly regulated and has been, long before the owners of Starbucks were even born.

Lavazza: Most sold coffee brand in Italy. Lavazza makes 2 lines of coffee geared to the preferred Italian styles, one for home use, and one commercial, but each and every one of them is different from each other and any coffee in the home line is totally different from any one in the commercial line. The home line consists of:
1. Qualità Oro - 100% Arabica beans from a blend of Central America and African highlands. Medium roast.
2. Qualità Rossa - 70% Brasilian arabica and 30% African robusta. Medium roast.
3. Gran Aroma - 60% arabica and 40% robusta. All Brasilian. Medium roast.
4. Gran Crema - 40% South America arabica and 60% Southeast Asia robusta. Dark roast.
5. Crema e Aroma - 30% South America arabica and 70% African robusta. Medium roast.

Qualità Rossa is the most readily available in Italy and hence the less expensive and most used/sold in Italy also. Qualità Oro is aimed at espresso style, Gran Crema is aimed at cappuccino and latte styles, with Gran Bar and Qualità Rossa being more versatile. Qualità Rossa seems to most to have a balance IN TASTE (smooth vs. strong) between arabica and robusta. The entire Lavazza home line is excellent Italian roast espresso coffee but is best to stick Gran Crema (mixing) and Qualità Oro (straight) for what they're geared for, and in the proper use you will find the correct taste, smoothness, and next to no bitterness, if any at all. They are all superb for use in the right manner and none of them are oily.

About me: I definitely do not like bitter or oily coffee (all coffee is oily per se, but I do not like coffee that has a distinct film of oil on top, which you can see at an angle and which is typically bitter coffee). I prefer cappuccinos and "lattes", but regardless I like a strong taste and therefore use Gran Crema, but I do enjoy espresso also so I do use Gran Aroma, which still has enough strong taste for my cappuccinos and lattes. My family in Italy in general prefer espressos and use Qualità Oro, but also use Qualità Rossa (much much less). You will only see me at Starbucks in case of dire emergency, which translates to 3 times in 20 years (once after an 18 hour travel marathon in planes). I'm not even mentioning any other coffee places. I use a Gaggia at home and drink tea while I travel. My entire family owns Gaggias. Not because we're married to the brand, but because we have tried plenty others, but Gaggias last us much better than the rest. My mother's must be at least 30 years old. However, one glance at her stove top will convince you it was around before Metusela.

Anecdote: I was quite entertained when I learned about the craziness to obsess over tamping pressures, weighing, and stopwatches. Out of curiosity on a British espresso machine that uses no electricity or stove (but you have to have boiling water so you need it anyway), I found a video of this American guy showing the ROK coffee maker which was totally obsessed with this and I learned that it was quite common. I told my mother, who laughed, and shared it at the local bar in her neighborhood the next morning. The barista (our friend) had to call me at 4 a.m. my time (it's ok, mamma has been doing it all these years). He almost didn't believe me. I had to send him youtube links, including the ROK guy. He asked "Are they crazy? People believe we use scales and stopwatches at the bars?" About tamping he said it's common sense. It has to be compact enough so that you get the flavor out of the coffee, but not too compact that breaks the pump on the machine.


Lava- zza means Rock of the Volcano in Italian. I'm disappointed, I found no rocks in mine. I searched and search yet somehow I didn't find my hidden prize that many have talked about. I saw the pictures and hope to get one like those I saw but it just didn't happen. My bag was nothing but mostly full nicely roasted beans. When this bag is done I'll order another an try it again. I really want an imported Italian stone.

My review isn't so much about how good this espresso bean is because it's just fantastic. However, I've found very little about the difference between this and the "Super Crema" version of the same Lavazza espresso bean.

I started about a year ago buying Super Crema and love it. It is a fantastic bean. However, being the price had seemed to come down a bit on the Gold Selection I figured I'd give it a try after a year of Super Crema.

The Gold Selection is absolutely fantastic. I love both, but now prefer the Gold a bit more.

Crema: Not sure what makes "Super Crema" any different than Gold Selection. Both have a great deal of crema and it holds very well. I noticed really no difference and if anything, Gold Selection may have a bit more crema.

Roast: The Super Crema is a lighter bean. It's much smoother, with less aromatics. The Gold Selection is a darker roast and the aroma hits you upon grinding.

Both are absolutely FANTASTIC. Here's how I'd suggest using. If you like to drink your espresso straight with no milk, maybe try the Super Crema as it's a bit smoother and more mellow. If you like to make lattes, go with the Gold Selection. I think the milk drowns out the mild flavor of the Super Crema a bit more than Gold Selection. I like to still taste the coffee. Sure you can use less milk to get the same result but this gives you a better overall drink JUST IN MY OPINION.

I would HIGHLY recommend this brand to anyone who drinks espresso, cappuccino or latte.
I am thrilled to find this brand is available online and at a great price.

I was introduced to this coffee in my local grocery store after purchasing a new espresso machine. (Even though a large chain store, their espresso brands are very limited.) It was on clearance and I was pleasantly surprised after tasting it. SUPERB flavor and not acidic. Unfortunately, the store no longer stocks this brand. Fortunately, I found it here.


This has been my go-to coffee for over a year now (particularly sweet espresso). I love the smoothness and the strong scent that hits you right when you open the bag.

Yes, I have noticed from time to time that I receive a bag that has past the "best before" date, but haven't detected a difference in flavor.

I'm definitely not one of those expert level coffee drinkers, but I have tried between 15 to 20 different brands of whole bean coffee and this one is by far my favorite without having to drop so much $$$. I wanted to find a good espresso on Amazon so I could set up the subscription feature for it. I ordered a few different brands including the Starbucks dark roast. This one blew them all out of the water. Everyone in our house couldn't get enough. Just the perfect amount of richness and mild bitterness. Such a creamy shot and you can easily drink it without adding anything. The perfect espresso I was searching for.

I buy this coffee in my local supermarket for more money, and gladly pay for it. I only started getting it because it was on sale at the time, and I've been hooked ever since. That was a year ago.

I've tried so many brands of coffee, this is by far my favorite. It has so much flavor and isn't bitter, or acidity like Starbucks, or Dunkin. It doesn't taste like other dark roasts. Add some heavy cream and its delicious, like a dessert. It has chocolatey hints. I make it pretty dark. To me it tastes best that way.
I recommend this coffee to everyone.

I intended to blend this with my regular coffee which I enjoy but has become boring.My first pot of this I prepared in my Bodum expecting the fine grind to be a problem because I grind my beans a bit less wasn't a "problem".I drank two pots of this in succession...I NEVER drink that much coffee in one day.This was SO smooth and flavorful that I'm not mixing this with ANYTHING.I had never heard of this coffee before....I was just experimenting....but I LOVE this coffee!!

This is literally the best ground coffee that I've ever had. It is intense, but not overly intense. Despite it being a pretty dark roast, there is no burnt or bitter flavor. It is just a smooth flow of perfect dark coffee. I would even go as far to say that there is probably no other dark roasted grounded coffee on the market that compares to this.
