I don’t normally write reviews unless the products are horrible or stupendous. This product is a dream. I’m 64, female, dislike loud gas engines I know nothing about, and am caretaking a wild 42 acre homestead in the hinterlands. The cabin has a very weedy “lawn” and vegetable raised bed garden of about 1 acre. It is important to keep it mowed here in California due to the possibility of fires. At first I thought I would need to weed eat the 2’ tall weeds that were here when I arrived, but no! This quiet little tool is a champ. After the initial swathes were cut at the 5” high setting, the upkeep has been easier than vacuuming. It maneuvers beautifully, is light weight and the startup is so simple and easy to keep going without fatigue. I easily rolled it on its side to clean out below, but it was already clean. The cost was less than half of hiring the job done.
It’s super simple to set up. There are two wing nuts and bolts on the lower handle to unscrew and add the rest of the handle...that’s it! Plug it in, push and hold the grey button and hold down the start handle. You’re in business!
Love it.

I've had this for about a month now and love it. It's very lightweight and works great. When I first got it, I charged the batteries and mowed the lawn. Our lawn is not that big, so I didn't use all the battery. I'm guessing I ran it in total for about 30 minutes (of and on). It's easy to start, easy to maneuver, and easy to empty the clippings. If you have a hook in your garage, this item will easily hang from the rafters if you wanted. It's that light. I've charged the batteries twice now and used the mower about 4 to 5 times. If you have a small lawn and need to be efficient with space in the garage, I'd highly recommend.

Let me talk about this gift from god. I’ve been using a manual push mower for a year on my small back yard, no electric, and it was hell. I got this, and it cut thru my 5ft grass like a beauty. And I live in townhouses and don’t like to disturb neighbors and it was surprisingly quiet. I think I shed actual tears. No more sweating.

This mower was as quiet as a Prius and powerful to cut through a foot of grass. Many reviews complained about the battery life but this wasn’t the case for me. I read in the manual that Greenworks sends the battery to you at only 35 - 50% charged so I charged it for an hour and it was ready to go. Since my lawn was so thick, I had to set it to the highest setting (which was very easy to adjust with the lever) for the first pass. After that, I lowered it to the 4th setting on the height adjuster and mower again with no battery issues. I have a 2100 sq ft lawn and had absolutely no issues with the battery; as it had half it’s life left after 45 minutes of mowing. This is a great lawn mower and very easy to maneuver due to the unit being so lite. If you’re looking for an electric cordless mower, Greenworks is for you. My lawn is only 2 months old but for the first cut I was impressed. I can’t wait until my lawn starts to grow thicker and build resiliency so I can start to see better mow lines instead of patches of flat grass.

After getting fed up with the high maintenance requirements of gas mowers and the hassle of using corded mowers, I finally sprung the $300 for this one. So far, it's been fabulous.

I've never run out of juice from the battery yet, and I've done jobs that last about 45 minutes. The battery is easy to get in and out of the charger and the mower. The handle easily folds down for more compact storage. It runs very smoothly and quietly. My favorite part is the very easy lever mechanism to adjust the mowing height.

I can't talk about the bag, because I just mow with the bag off to get some mulch on my yard. Doing that, I don't get any grass splash on my pants, which is also nice.

The only drawbacks to this thing are that it's only 16 inches wide, which is less than some other mowers, and it isn't self-propelling. However, I wasn't looking for a bigger or self-propelling mower.

Now I really wish I had just bought this right off the bat instead of dealing with other, less convenient mowers in the past.

Wow! I have a huge yard with hills and different levels and tons of corners and this machine rocks it!

My older male neighbor came out and took a picture of me mowing my lawn and laughed at me saying You're never gonna mow your lawn with that toy! Well... He was wrong.

It lasts way longer than thirty minutes and it's so light you can run with it and maneuver around corners and seedlings...you could never do that with a regular mower!

This is a paradigm shift in lawn mowing...people will be buying this just to mow edges and tight spots or just for the sheer pleasure of it!

It's so light and quiet that you have almost none of the usual mowing fatigue. It's so light any kid could use it if you could trust them not to cut their toes off. And the forty ish minute battery limit is a blessing really.

One tip: when it kicks into high gear turn it off and clean it out right away or you will drain the battery faster.

Hats off to the Chinese for reinventing the lawn mower and thank you Sun Joe.

I was quite impressed and surprised with the power on this thing. My lot is only about a tenth of an acre, but the battery indicator showed 2/3 charge remaining after I was finished. I was almost disappointed that I ran out of yard to mow! I only had to empty the waste bin once, and this is very quick and easy to do.

The mower is easy to assemble and can be carried or moved easily with one hand. It starts immediately with the push of a button. Before this mower, I was using a reel (manual) push mower and was frustrated by how poorly it would cut thicker weeds. This Sun Joe mower went through 90% of the thicker weeds without even auto-selecting a higher power setting. On the rare occasions where it did go in to high power mode, it easily cut through the thicker weeds. This thing is so quiet, you could probably get away with mowing your lawn at any time of the day/night without annoying your neighbors.

Sun Joe has surpassed my expectations so far with this mower. I will update after a few months of seeing how this holds up.

Edit 8/15/2017 - I'm updating this to 5 stars because even given the issues below, I would buy this product again over any competitors I could find in this product category. I've used this for 4 years now and it still works the same as it did new. I remarked below on poor cut quality in some scenarios where blade speed can fall too low which is still a problem, but this really only occurs when mulching. Cutting thick or tall grass with the discharge open improves the pace and cut quality in this scenario but there are limitations, mowing fields is still going to produce a crappy cut no matter what you use.

Let's get a few things out of the way, these do not impact the product score, as they are common to all products in this category:

1. This is a corded mower. Dealing with the cord is sometimes a pain. If you have a lot of trees or obstacles you may want to consider something else.
2. Maximum power is limited to a 120V outlet and what can safely make it out an extension cord (about 1650W, for reference 1HP is ~745W).
3. With no batteries to wear out or engines to refuel/re oil, this is very cheap to operate. Running this mower at peak output generally costs 8-25c/hour. You also hit an advantage in purchase price as gas or cordless units with the same features generally cost 50-100% more.
4. Short of hitting something, bogging down an electric motor generally allows it to produce more power and speed back up again (unlike a gasoline engine).

So, what's good about this? Well:

1. 21" Steel deck. The actual blade is 19.5" leaving you a little less than an inch on either side of the deck that won't be cut. You can get a much closer cut with this than the B&D plastic models that have a very thick plastic housing. It's also going to survive rocks/sticks much better than the plastic ones. Both the discharge cover and bag seem to attach easily and solidly. It also makes it look more like a lawn mower and less like a big kid's toy.

2. Light (<55lbs). Since you're not carrying your power source onboard it will be lighter than any other mower in this size class (compare to 75-90lb for gas or battery electric). Larger rear wheels give easy maneuverability. Single lever height adjust works well and is spring loaded so you can raise or lower it with one hand.

3. 3 in one operation - A lot of electric mowers whether they're cordless or corded are limited on power, most get around this by using more efficient blade designs that generate less lift but mulching can be slower. With a reasonably well manicured lawn it doesn't matter much, but cut quality and performance drop off a lot if mulching tall or really thick grass. Since this model has a side discharge that remains an option for thick grass and improves cut speed significantly without wasting your clippings, quite a few electrics don't have a discharge option.

The bad?

1. Wheels/axles could be shielded a little bit so the cord doesn't tend to wrap around it and go under.

2. Mulching anything thick is slow, mowing through thick grass can take quite a bit of time (and tends to clump the output.) I think this is more related to the blade design, when you move fast through thick patches it will cut but leave a few standing, if it had more lift I think it would draw these up (and also help propel the discharge better). Unfortunately the blade seems to have proprietary mounting holes so that's hard to do.

Now, into the nitty-gritty:

This mower is powered by a brushed DC electric motor (Globe 7080). Brushed DC motors are lighter and cheaper than AC synchronous motors or induction motors. However they're generally less durable or efficient.

The Globe 7080 has a peak efficiency (their spec) of 68%. Peak efficiency at 3500RPM (590W output at 7.3A), Peak power at 2245RPM (860W output at 13A). Here's why that's a problem:

Mowers are generally limited (by agreement) to a maximum blade tip speed of 19000 feet per minute (for safety of items that may be thrown from the mower). Higher blade speeds give more lift helping the grass get lifted into the cutting path and making cleaner cuts. At max efficiency RPM the blade is moving about 17,800FPM on this mower. If you start cutting too fast you'll bog it down. Because it's electric it picks up torque so it will keep spinning but you don't hit peak power until about 11,600FPM. This is far too slow and you'll start seeing missed cuts and ragged lines (I noticed this in actual usage).

So since you can't really cut that slow, maximum usable power is closer to 600-650W, or less than 1HP. By comparison, a Honda GCV160 engine at 3600RPM (a common governer setting for push mowers) outputs about 3425W, falling to around 2800W at 3000RPM.

Obviously there are electrical supply limitations to a mower like this. It's perfectly serviceable but nothing amazing, if they ran a brushless motor in here it would undoubtedly cost more but the efficiency could be much higher (>85%) and could be designed for peak power much closer to the ideal blade speed.

Here's the specs on the motor, some were given others were hand calculated.

This lawnmower is a BEAST. My lawn was overgrown by a month and a half and this lawnmower didn't even flinch. Perfect size for a moderate sized yard, very powerful and super easy to assemble. It actually comes completely assembled minus one handle section you need to attach. The batteries lasted at least 45 minutes, possibly longer. It also stores upright and takes up little space. Highly recommend!

Bought this mower about six months ago after my old corded black and decker passed away. That older mower mainly died due to an extension cord problem. The short 14 gauge cord ‘faded’ over time (resistance went up) and was no longer able to provide the Amps the mower needed. This ‘brown out’ condition kills the life span of the electric motor. I bought a new 12 gauge cord for that mower and the speed and torque picked up but the damage was done. When I got this Greenworks mower I decided to take no chances and picked up a 10 gauge electrical cord. Yes it is heavier and bulkier, but not too bad. With this cord and sharp blade this mower performs pretty close if not equal to a gas mower. (Which I own too). The test to claim that is that you can tell by the RPM dip you hear when you hit tall grass. Just took 6-8 inch overgrown grass down to 2”. and this mower did Its job. No complaints yet.

I'm a senior citizen lady, 75 years old. This is the best lawnmower I've ever owned. Due to lots of rain and a lawn mower that gave out, my grass is a foot tall in the backyard. My front yard was less tall and only took one charge. My back yard will take several charges because I'm inching along. The bag works wonderfully. I have to stop and empty it often because the grass is so tall; and the bag is the perfect size. If it was bigger it would be harder for me to carry to the compost pile.I can tell when the bag is full when the motor sounds a little louder. Definitely try using the bag. I've never used one before and I like it much better than the side shoot.

I have a bit of a troublesome yard to mow. I live in the country with a yard that is bumpy and what I call country grass. Also have some steep hillsides, one that has 10 blueberry bushes planted on it and need to be mowed around. Just lots of problem areas that need special equipment to deal with...so I have a riding mower, weedeaters of course, a cub cadet power push weedeater ( I call it a small brush hog)...a self propelled mower and now this electric mower. I wanted it to mow areas that are too large for the weedeater but yet too small for the power mower. I truly amazed at the job it does. It feels like a toy but does the job of a mower. I see from reviews that people are concerned it is not self propelled...I don't usually add my age to reviews but I am a 77 year old woman and I can tell you I have no problem at all pushing this along...in fact I find my self propelled Husqvarna mower much harder to use on a hillside, in small areas ( not knocking that mower, I love it) but this little Sun Joe is perfect for what I needed.
It's also nice to use for ' touch ups' between big mowing jobs to knock down weeds that grow quicker that grass ( I did mention I have country grass, which means weeds are allowed).
I also have pocket gardens that need to be mowed around the stone work...very labor intense with a weedeater, but I can quickly just zoom around them now very easily with this mower.
Very glad I purchased it...so far I'm extremely happy with it.

I was a little skeptical about the quality of this mower. Kind of half expected to have to return it for one reason or another. First, assembly was easy. I only needed a phillips for 2 screws on the handle. Everything else just snaps into place. The only adjustment I had to make was to set the wheels at the proper height, and that only took one minute. The mower has plenty of torque to handle high grass and weeds. I also chose not to use the attachments, and instead, let the mower just mulch for me. Did a great job. I also tracked power usage. I used it for a solid 1/2 hour and when I checked the battery status, all 3 lights were lit, which means my mowing didn't put a dent in the battery capacity. My back yard has a varied landscape, about 50'x20' and even though the mower only cuts a 14" swath, it only took 1/2 hour. Can't beat this mower for the price and ease of use!

I have a 3/4 acre yard and I bought an extra battery for this mower! I went through both batteries and still had some yard left to mow, I knew they wouldn't last for the whole yard but I think if I had a 3rd battery between them I would have got the job done! Had to get on the bad boy zero turn to finish, and that is another story! But I feel the mower did very well! I could probably split up the front and back and just do in 2 different days! Good workout too! Does a body good! But the pictures show part of the front! It did a good job!

Not much one to write reviews. Was very hesitant about getting a battery operated mower. Just not seeing great reviews across the board, but this particular one had the better reviews. Did not want want a gas mower and I use a tractor mower for my yard, but wanted something for my son to learn with. It has been a fantastic starter mower for him and I have used it also to great pleasure of how easy and efficient it is. My son just turned 13 and very easy for him to use with the start button, to maneuver, and the noise level is far, far less than a gas mower. The charge on the battery lasts for 3 mows for the area that he covers and possibly could last the 1/4 acre no problem if I used it instead of my tractor mower. Definitely recommend and would buy again. Also, was super easy to assemble out of the box, and easy to adjust as needed for height of the cut and the height of the mower. Like the design of the battery placement - easy in and out, and the contacts are up instead of down where dirt and dust could collect.

This is a light weight easy to use push mower. I use it to trim around my planting areas, driveway, & sidewalk. Would be fine for a small yard. I Mow for 30 minutes on half a battery. Battery when fully depleted charges back to full in less than 2 hours. Liked it so much I bought the Greenworks battery edger.

**Greenworks 17-Inch 40V Cordless Lawn Mower, 4.0Ah Battery and Charger Included MO40B411**

First summer of having the yard to mow and first cordless mower.
I am short and middle-aged.

↑ Very easy to put together - not much to do
↑ Battery charged quickly
↑ It's pretty 🙂
↑ It's a lawnmower, it makes noise - but it's not overly loud
↑ I had no problem getting the battery in/out of either the charger or the mower
↑ The battery has lights on it to show you how much charge you have
↑ The charger has lights to let you know when it is charging and charged
↑ Oh so easy to start and stop
↑ No gas to buy, no gas smell
↑ The bag is super easy to put on or take off

→ I wish this mower would have been cheaper (bought at $297) but if the the mower, the blades and the battery hold up, I will gratefully take that back.

My Experience (and I have only used it twice so far)

• When the box came, I did have to "lug" it into the garage (135 lb person here). I wouldn't describe it as weighing nothing/lightweight, but I had no problem pushing it around the yard.
• Opened the box, got it out, and tightened the upper part of the arm to the lower part. Clipped the wire to the arm. Took a total of maybe 10 min.
• Plugged the charger in and it took 1 hour to charge the battery.
• Before you start mowing: look under the mower to make sure that everything seems tightened and there is nothing restricting movement of the blade (mine was fine, but I think everyone should check) and then check the rest of the bolts/fasteners to make sure they are tight too (just in case).
• You press the button in and hold it while you pull the wire handle to the upper arm of the mower and hold it. If you release it, the mower stops.
• And away I went - it is not self propelled - you have to push it yourself. I didn't have a problem at all and mowed my small backyard and one side with half of the charge. It should easily get my front yard and the other small side on one charge of the battery. But that is all I did that day.
• I haven't used the bag. But I may use it in the fall to mulch leaves and not have to rake them up - it should make it easier to put them in bags (we shall see).
• I absolutely love it and am thinking of getting the weedeater to use (with the same battery!)
• If the battery lasts thru the summer, I am going to be thrilled to no end!

***I watched a video on YouTube before I even bought the thing, so I knew what would come and how to put it together and about the battery. I also did look at the manual. I think (hope) that the negative reviews about the battery are from people who left the battery in for a long time and/or the charger plugged in. I watched the battery and took it out when it was charged and I will always unplug the charger unless I am using it.

I originally wrote a 5 star review because I was super impressed with the initial results. The battery is TERRIBLE! No power, short life- DO NOT BUY. The first charge I mowed almost a 1/2 acre or of overgrown lawn and was in love- thought I had found a battery powered line I could be happy with. BY THE THIRD CHARGE I can't even mow my front yard which is only a 12'x15'. The mower stalled on numerous occasions and then the battery died. I also got the weed whacker, so we are out a lot of money- please don't make this investment and then have regret. If you do -good luck, I hope I'm the only one getting a lemon

After 6 years of very nice mowing with my 16" deck Greenworks Battery Mower the starter switch died.
With my 1000 sq. ft. of lawn half mowed and no mower I went to Amazon to buy a similar mower.

Going to a 17" deck mower that uses a 16" blade seemed an odd fit, but I think that extra inch of space really helped throw the grass to the back of the grass catcher. My 16" mower did a poor job of that and I usually had to empty the bag half full due to the front end blockage. NOT ANYMORE! I was so pleased with the very clean cut, picking all the grass and leaves and THROWING it all to the back of the bag. WOW! So nice. So I ordered it two days ago. They shipped it to me yesterday. I got it at 3 p.m. assembled it and finished mowing by 4 p.m. A big 5 Stars for now, since I just got it. I WILL be back to amend rating if any unexpected problems arise. Doubtful though, my last Greenworks mower lasted 6 years with no problems.
p.s. This new model has some great improvements too. Check it out.

I wish I could give this 10 STARS! I have a backyard with a walkway to the pool, numerous flower areas besides the raised boxes for veggies and also a fish pond. This mower/trimmer makes it so easy to take care of this unusual setup. I don't need to bump it to get the string out, it just reloads as you go. I can switch from mowing to trimming by just stepping on the lever. I purchased an extra battery that has double the use time. It's a little heavier with that battery but not a burden. I use the 4.0 battery and one of the 2.0 each time I mow but still have power left when I'm finished. I also have a screwdriver that uses the same batteries; thus that is why I purchased an extra. You can go over things that you couldn't with a real mower (it's a weed wacker on wheels) so you don't have to be afraid of any blade breaking. This would be perfect for a small yard or for someone elderly who doesn't want to deal with a gas powered mower. Just an incredible product. Here's a photo of my complicated area.

OMG, where has this thing been all my life? Seriously, I'd give it 20 stars if I could.

So... a few caveats to begin with. If you have a standard lawn - ie a flat, smooth, open, easily accessible piece of land covered with turf, then you might be happier with either the corded model or with a standard electric mower. But, if you're dealing with an obstacle course like I am, this thing is a total lifesaver. I just did the entire yard in half an hour - it usually takes 2-3 hours - and it did a vastly superior job to my old corded mower. I kept expecting the batteries to die on me, but to my great surprise I ended up having battery power to spare. My yard consists of a bunch of disconnected areas of grass - the biggest area is about 50'x20', then there are about 3 sections that are about 15'x15' each, and a few other paths & odd shaped areas, with planters, greenhouses, bushes, trees, steps, and terraces between.

This is basically a cordless weed whacker with a wheeled base. There is no blade, just the nylon whacker cord. It's super light and manuverable, which is perfect if you're trying to deal with tight spaces, hills, and various obstacles. It's really easy to pull the whacker in and out of the base, and that was really the only problem I had with it - It sorta got clogged with clippings and I wasn't getting it properly snapped into place, so it would pull out as I was mowing. Once I figured it out, I just wiped the clippings away and the problem went away. It's super convenient to be able to switch back and forth from mowing to whacking especially with all of the crazy edges that I'm dealing with.

I was a little bit concerned about the small wheels because the ground here isn't exactly even, and my old mower would easily get one of its wheels stuck. But with this thing when you get stuck you just grab the top handle with your other hand and pick it up. Most of the time though, I just used one hand with a vacuum cleaner type motion. So I didn't mow in long rows like you have to with a standard mower, and for my space that works much, much better.

I was amazed how much power it had. It could actually handle the small volunteer saplings that spring up everywhere in addition to the grass. I accidentally cut off a few pieces of wood vine that were nearly half an inch thick because I just wasn't expecting it to be able to cut through something like that.

The only other thing I'm not wild about is the safety switch. I found it a bit awkward, and ended up having to push the safety in with one hand while I pulled the trigger with the other. So I could do without that, but I understand why it's there. But compared to the hassle of dealing with a cord, and trying to lift the old mower over the steps and terraces, that's a very small price to pay. I still can't believe I mowed the whole yard in 30 minutes with absolutely no cursing. Hooray!

This is my first lawnmower I have purchased for myself, to go along with the first house I have ever purchased. Of course, I have used plenty of gas powered mowers in the past, so I'm well familiar with how they operate. This Greenworks mower is just as good, except it's much quieter, much easier to start, (no starting cord to yank on) and MUCH easier to maintain. No gas, no oil, no spark plugs to worry about. It easily handles grass and weeds. I live in the Northwest, in Washington State, and it rains here a lot. Which means, if you wait for the grass to be totally dry, often times it's grown pretty tall, especially in the Spring. This mower cut it right down, no problem. In my side yard, the grass had gotten really tall, and there were tons of weeds and dandelions. This mower ate them right up, didn't bog down once. Although I did have to empty the bag more frequently, of course. Also, it's super easy to adjust the height; just move one control and it goes up or down as you wish.

The one and only thing that takes some getting used to is keeping track of the extension cord. It loves to get tangled up and catch on things. It's kind of a trade-off. I don't have to keep the gas and oil full, but I do have to roll up a 75 foot cord when I'm done. I'm careful to watch and make sure that cord doesn't get under the mower.

Overall, there are far more pluses than drawbacks; I'm very happy with this mower, and I would buy it again.

I had the previous model that I had purchased at Lowes and I loved it. I left it behind when I moved to a different state and started using the Toro gas mower that came with the house we bought. I had nothing but problems with that mower. I was always working on it to get another few months of life out of it. I finally decided I had enough of that when it wouldn't start for me again and purchased this mower that same day.

When it arrived, I set it up and was mowing in about 10 minutes. No rip cords, no gas, no oil. Just plug it in and push to start. I'll never go back to gas. Cost me about half as much as a replacement gas mower would have and it's always going to start on the first try. It's a lot lighter and a little smaller than the pictures make it look. But I appreciate that because it's not self propelled so the weight makes it easier to push. If you're worried about the cord getting in your way I wouldn't. I have to adjust it's position every now and then but it's not that bad. It's more like vacuuming than mowing and that's ok with me.

Purchased this for a new home. Wanted to reduce noise level and try something different.

Cord management: Yeah, it's kind of a pain. But after a week or two of regular use, you get the hang of it. You've just got to learn your instrument.

Starting: Easy. Push a button and pull back on a handle. Instant start.

How does it mow? Better than a gas mower. This thing has eaten through five yard's worth of high grass and weeds without so much as a whimper. It has NEVER stopped, how matter how big a bite of weeds/grass I took. When mowing high grass, just press down on the handle, move the mower forward, and lower the blade directly over the grass. Easy peasy. It's light weight makes mowing easier (if it weren't for the cord, it's light weight feels like your using a reel mower).

Is it quieter than a gas mower? A little bit. Make no mistake, it still sounds like a lawnmower. But a slightly more refined, less in-yo-face, mower.

No gas or oil required; just a long extension cord or two. And if it breaks, I don't have to cry because my $300+ mower bit the dust. Inexpensive, but it definitely doesn't feel cheap. Also, the single lever blade-height adjustment is something that's been a long-time coming. SOMEBODY SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT ONE YEARS AGO...

GreenWorks has put a lot of brainal horsepower behind the design of this mower, and it shows. I'm a fan. Highly recommended.

EDIT 9/27/2018: I found my only gripe about this mower: The clippings bag is too small. I'm used to larger bags that require emptying less often. Still, the bag works okay, but if you're mowing a lot, expect to empty the bag a lot. Also, the bag does taper toward the opening, which creates a jam point when emptying. This means you have to grab the clippings to pull them out of the bag. Otherwise, you'll be standing there all day trying to shake the clippings out of the bag. A minor annoyance, but not enough to dock a star. After an entire season of mowing some dense and very tall grass/weeds, this thing is still going strong.

EDIT 11/2/2021: After 3-1/2 years, my GreenWorks is still going strong. Other than an occasional cleaning, the only thing I've done for it is to purchase a new blade that will go on next season (spring 2022). The absolute best money I've ever spent for a lawn mower.
