Great product! I’m glad I paid a slightly higher price because it was well worth it. The pieces are solid and heavy. They will not fall over when your opponent “accidentally” bumps the table. They look good enough to keep out and are sturdy enough to handle your buddy’s kids when they show up unexpectedly. I still don’t know why he brings them over here. The set comes with a silicone mat that rolls up to take places, extra queens, an informative strategy pamphlet, and for some reason mine came with several packets of googly eyes. I tried sticking them on the pieces but they just didn’t look right. Still very impressed with the weight and the feel of the pieces and the solid noise they make when you clunk them down on the board. Makes me feel like a pro.

Star Man

Absolutely fabulous set! Second time purchasing this set and it's my favorite. Top quality and great attention to detail on the knight. I love the spongy mat over the standard vinyl mats. I was worried is would have fold creases from being in that box, but not at all. Those complaints about "Toxic" smell? Give me a break, it airs out fast once you free it from its imprisonment in the box. Good lord, don't you know what "New car" smell is like? Any new toy has that smell for a bit, snowflakes. P.S. love the googly eyes.

TLDR; Yes.

Easy review that I'm happy to leave.

I upgraded to this set from your standard cheap, old, unweighted club tournament vinyl-board set that you see everywhere (poorly pictured for comparison). I feel you're mostly paying for the presentation of this package. It's definitely on the pricey side but not excessively so, in my opinion. If you want a nice heavily weighted set in "natural" color for white with a good-enough board at your door in a couple of days, this is a perfectly good and reasonable buy.

- The pieces are satisfyingly heavy and appropriately sized for a 20x20 tournament board. I can't overstate how great they feel to move around. Paraphrasing, but another reviewer said something like "Every move feels important". Accurate.
- Turns out I'm a huge fan of matte over gloss/reflective for the finish. Good stuff.
- Not necessary for me, but the accompanying literature is excellent and well put together for beginners. The googly eyes are a cute touch.
- The bags feel a *little* flimsy but sufficient. Most sets just come with plastic bags containing the pieces with storage being an afterthought. Cool.

- I'm not sure this is an actual con but reviews need cons. Right? Right. The silicon board is neat but I THINK I prefer my old crusty vinyl board - and not because I can actually slide the pieces on vinyl. I just prefer it. It looks and feels better to me overall. There is (however) something to be said about being able to grab your board and wad it up like a letter you drunkenly began penning to (perhaps) an ex girlfriend and smartly regretted and abandoned the whole idea halfway through. The silicon board wants, no, demands that kind of treatment. Mine came with some deep creases (in silicon?!) that I think are probably permanent but... No big deal. The jury's out on how I ultimately feel about it but I do think it's neat. BONUS: It appears they are no longer offering black or green boards - instead you get a double sided board with both colors. If you prefer a black board it's ok to be wrong. Don't be so hard on yourself. Good call from the manufacturer.
- All the cool kids in these reviews like to highlight the chemical smell emanating from the board. In the spirit of wanting to be a cool kid too I can confirm the board has a pretty intense chemical smell out of the box. Leave it outside in the fresh air for a day or so and forget all about it. Alternatively, and for dramatic effect, you can try the ultra high IQ method someone suggested of sticking your board into a HELLISHY HOT 400 DEGREE OVEN for a bit. Toppings optional. I'm not actually suggesting you do this.

Great set. A little pricey but totally worth it for me.

At 72 y/o, I decided to try to learn chess again. The teachers were wonderful and all rather high-ranking competitors, but I found chess is essentially a passion and a compulsion. As a librarian with a master's degree, I've learned that when approaching a new subject it's very helpful to start at a very simple level to get the feel for the subject. When an event came up, I sent this, along with the portable chess set, to my 'brainy' young grandson. He'll probably catch on before I would, but I'm tempted to re-order this for myself and take another go at it!

I teach chess to children from 4-11 years old. This is my go-to book for the younger players, that is early readers to maybe age 8 or 9. It is all a young learning player needs to dive into the beauty and fun of chess. Lots of color. Clearly written and illustrated.

It is also a good book for parents and grandparents to use as a guide if they have forgotten (or never knew) some of the rules and tactics.

Once one has mastered everything in this book, he or she can enjoy chess for a lifetime. Or if the young player wants to move on to scholastic tournaments, it will still have laid a good foundation for more advanced texts.

My 8yr old son studied this book the night he received it and was teaching his 5yr old brother how to play Chess the next morning! Highly recommended.

This is a great chess set. A nice wooden board, wooden pieces, the magnets work well without being too strong, yet hold if you bend the board, they hang on. I would describe the magnetic hold as a "perfect" blend of strong enough to hold, but does not hinder your natural movement at all. The felt on the bottom is nice as well, soft, smooth, good quality. And I like the feel of the chess pieces in hand. This is a nice, quality chess set.

There are some other "similar", okay, almost identical chess sets here on Amazon, but this is the one you want. The other one has straps for your chess pieces instead of a mold like this one. If you have ever had those straps before, you know they will eventually snap or come out, this mold will be good for the life of the chess set.

Now, to describe the pics I attached. I had only 1 piece that was cracked. As you can see, that knight's nose is about to fall off. It wouldn't be long before it would break. I emailed customer support describing my issue and I attached the two pics with the flaw shown. I emailed them on Monday at 10:55 am, they responded back Tuesday at 6:44 am confirming my shipping address, I responded back 4 mins later. Then, Wednesday at 9:15 pm, they emailed me letting me know I would receive the replacement the upcoming Tuesday, but no, it got here only 2 days later on Friday, whoa, nice! And here comes the mind-blowing part, they sent an ENTIRE set of replacement pieces for BOTH colors in a box with nice pouches....whaaaat!?! 😮 I will admit, I had a rook that had a "tiny" bit of glue on it, and a king that had one little ball of stain that built up, but I'm OCD, and I didn't want to ask them to replace those just because I'm OCD, but of course, the knight had the legitimate flaw with the crack, but they must have read my mind and then STILL went ABOVE and BEYOND what I would've requested! I mean, I only emailed them about the one piece, and to send this whole pieces replacement set, WOW! Kudos to you Amerous support!!! And thank you Angel for the fast emails! Thank you Amerous for DEFINITELY standing behind your product with customer service!

I HIGHLY recommend this chess set!

Jason Hurd aka Reverend Vader

After watching Searching for Bobby Fisher and The Queen of Katwe, my 12-year-old daughter started a chess club. I wanted to get her a nice, portable (but full-sized) wooden chess set that she could use and take with her... without breaking the bank. This set is about perfect. The pieces are a good quality carved wood, with strong magnets and a nice felt layer on the bottom. There is an extra queen for each color. (Great for pawn promotion when your queen is still in play!) The pieces fit nice and snug(ly) inside the foldable board in their custom-shaped foam-core "slots." Plus, 15 inches is a really nice sized board to play on. She's really happy with it. It may not be the most inexpensive board out there, but - for the price - the quality of this set is really, really good.

I honestly was blown away when I opened it! First of all it is bigger than I thought it would be. I love the smell of wood and this set "reeks" of it, but in a good way! The pieces are very well made and you get 2 extra queens to crown the pawns that reach the end of the game board. The magnets work great and you do not even see them. A little handle to carry as a briefcase would have been nice but it can be adapted if you wanted to.

4. The Karmadont Chess Set (The Way of the Shaman: Book #5) LitRPG series

The Karmadont Chess Set (The Way of the Shaman: Book #5) LitRPG series

Mr. Galt

Mahan just wanted some solitude. He had from the beginning even. He just wanted his time served, and later his crafting done in peace. Throughout the entire series, this can't happen because damn near every last person he meets is a backstabbing manipulator and so he's constantly caught in something far bigger than himself and only occasionally given a chance at his own goals. A chance that never lasts long as any successes are invariably accompanied by a global notification immediately followed by all of his handlers jumping on him.

In this book, Mahan finally learns a lesson all men should know by now and anyone who understands female nature could seen coming a hundred kilometers away. He is patrolled by his thot quite epicly for being such a simp throughout the last four books.

This rating would be lower except... he gets better. Let's see more of a self actualizing Mahan in the future.

I have to admit I was reluctant to buy this one after seeing the scores here, and since the book 4 was definitely subpar. But unless you are under 14, this book is a worthy addition to the series. Can't wait for the sequel. Honestly, with all the sales these books seem to be having, they should really hurry up the translation.

Some spoilers coming on.

While the book has suffered in certain areas that seem a bit too slow for me, and the very ending was a bit over-dramatized - especially Anastaria's desire to gloat and make our Shaman suffer, I am delighted with the ending. For one, Anastaria was unbelievably boring. I kept thinking I hope she gets killed soon or just goes back to Phoenix from pretty much book 2. The whole romance between them was awful, probably due to author's inability to write romance. Hopefully, he'll stay away from it in the future. It also seems a stretch that Anastaria would whore herself like that with full support from mother and father, but OK.

Plinto was not a part of the betrayal thing I hope, he was the only fairly interesting character from the whole lot.

I would say proclaiming that M. is no longer of any importance in the game was also a bit overdone to pull the emotional string. As the only dragon and soon to be Harbinger, even has he lost everything, including Castle and the embrio, he would still be well off. As we stand at the end, he has bought his freedom, has enough in game money to be right on the outside, so it's hard to feel sorry for him.

In book 5 I expect some serious leveling, it is really embarrassing how low M. level is after all this time. They just said they leveled Barsina to 174 in a day or something. Time for M. to become a total bad-ass.

Now, i give this a 5 because it is greatly written and well done on the translation too. On emotional level, its something else. Way higher.
This book was one of the series until around 90% after that it shocked my world. So much that it terrifies me. It made me question my own way, my way of life, how i see the world. Unfortunatelly i cannot say that it has changed in a positive way. There is barely any book that have had this kind of effect on me. I blake this book for the person i will be for the next few days. I curse this book, this moment, this writer...
Still, read and buy it.

It is a good weighted set and the chess pieces are the classic Staunton design. Plus it comes with two extra queens, and while beginners may not realize this, it is not that uncommon to have two queens on the board at the same time, so it is quite nice to have two extra queens for that reason.

The board is good enough and I have had no problems with it, and the case is fine two, and has a strap for easy carrying.

I have played chess for many years and was once rated just below master, so I have played quite a lot of games and have had many different chess sets. This one is a good full-sized travel set for the price.
Quite reasonable and a very playable chess set.

A decent package deal considering other options / prices available. However, a few things to mention.

The bases were hollowed and weights poured/placed/glued inside, then thin felt glued over the bottom, sometimes a bit off-center. You can still feel a hollow in the center, but I've noticed no loose / rattling parts inside.

You can see in the pictures that the hooks/rings on the straps are plastic, and I don't imagine they would bear much weight. The bag is lightly padded, which should be enough to protect against incidental contact, but I shouldn't like to test it against dropping a clock onto a hard surface from shoulder height. Other bags might have partitioned pockets for carrying books or notepads, but this bag has just a single long pocket (as well as the lightly padded compartments for pieces and chess clock). The hooks and rings on the straps are plastic, so will not bear *too* much weight, but that shouldn't be an issue for the weight of the set, board, chess clock, and perhaps a couple light books. I'm not sure my big mechanical clock will fit in the bag, but the bag will fit most other clocks I've seen.

The rooks look odd to me, and I don't like the stark whiteness of the light pieces. But the pictures do show what you get.

This high-quality set should last a lifetime for any occasional to hard-core player when stored in the durable soft travel case. Place the pieces in a zip lock bag for easy removal and replacement in the two end pockets. A larger center pocket handles a chess timer. The board rolls up like a scroll for storage inside a full-length apron. The bag has both handle and shoulder straps. The weighted pieces require about a thirty-degree angle to topple so they should stand well in a brisk wind or accidental touch.

No BS Guy

Our family grew up together in some sort of Jenga haze where at every get together this was dragged out and we played for hours.

Fast forward 15 years and I got this for my 3 year old (yeah, yeah, he doesn't have the manual dexterity or patience....Stop interrupting me) to pass that haze onto the next generation.

Guess what, he loves Jenga!! Just not in the ultra competitive, beer fueled way. He views them as blocks, so we spend an hour or so each episode building stuff and knocking it down.

Eventually we will start actually playing Jenga, but for now, his journey towards the haze of my youth is wonderful.

Peace, No BS Guy

I bought these for an adult drinking game using google suggestions for each block, worked out well!

This is a really good game. It actually improves the focus of kids, because if you will lose the focus you may lose the game. The best part about it is, you can plaiit alone or with more players so you are not bound by number of players. I buyed it for my 8 years old son because he liked it so much. We have to actually remove each block at a time on your turn and make sure the tower should not loose the balance. Overall I like this game because you can spend hours playing this without getting bored as well you can finish it early if you have limited time. Overall worth it's price and good game.

Modern Chess Openings, 15th Edition

Rob Wehrli

I bought this particular copy for some aspiring chess players. I am beyond the point where I'm going to study openings in any sort of formal manner. I first read this book at least 20+ years ago and I worked through many of the variations in the book for some of the openings that I preferred. You could probably spend at least half a lifetime investigating all of the openings contained in this book.

I used this book to attack opponents who were less salient in opening theory. If you are serious about learning chess, you can't hardly beat MCO as the defacto standard for the opening game. I'm torn between learning the end game before opening theory, but you can't hardly do one without the other. This is probably not the most recent edition, but if you're looking for a big list of standard openings and their numerous variations, just about any recent revision should work nicely. If you're not really interested in working with a few chess sets and several positions at the same time, you may not be interested in this title. Imagine 20+ variations to every opening and a dissertation on the pros and cons of each in relatively terse prose. That's MCO in a nutshell. If you feel that you need opening study, this is the bible of openings in chess.

If you've ever had someone smack you down and claim some named opening for which you had no knowledge of, then you probably need this book to continue your chess prowess. If you're not really ready to study the positions and work through may want to pass. If you want to kill at chess, you should already own this book--in a hopefully recent rendition. If you have *never* studied openings, then buy the cheapest version because there is a lot of value in the basic openings that are fully commented in this book.

Thomas Kavanaugh

This book was originally published in 1911 and has gone through 15 different editions. It's almost as if it's a family heirloom being passed down from one generation to another... what an amazing concept to see how the openings of this wonderful game have been transformed, redirected, and mutated with variations.
We are certainly lucky to have someone as talented of a writer as Nick de Firmian explain to us in plain, easy-to-understand language how to become masterful at getting the right start to every game. This is an awesome book that I'll study continuously all year long! Thank you!

I mean it's just a great book for everyone, from beginners to more advanced players. It gots all the most important lines on a lot of openings, it's a very good way to learn theory and start building a great opening repertory. It doesn't contain all the opening lines but it got all the most important ones which is totally find.

For example, as a beginner, I'm a huge fan of the Scandinavian defense, also known in the book as the center counter defense, and I was hoping to explore more of his variation like the closed Scandinavian. But the book actually only has the mainline (3...Qa5) and the modern variation (2...Nf6) with 3 main lines for ich with minors lines which is ok, but I'm still a little disappointed about that since I was hoping to see at list the Qe6 and Qe8 Lines which doesn't appear.

But still, I highly recommend this book to anyone. God blesses u all, have a good.

Update 05/15/2021
It doesn't have the Fried liver attack line from the two knights' defense, but it surprisingly has the Traxler counterattack also as the Wilkes-Barre in the book.

I've been a chess fanatic since about the age of nine. While I've played in clubs and tournaments, and in countless informal games on-line and with friends; I've never quite gotten past a certain level of understanding. I've read innumerable books on openings, middle game and end games and have found few that have helped me to improve my game. For a high-end Generation Xer like me who grew up watching TV, it could just be that I learn better when the information is presented audio-visually.

This is an EXCELLENT product. My 12 year old son (who has become a chess fanatic in his own rite) and I have been watching two to three lessons per weekend since this package has arrived. Jeremy Silman is an excellent teacher; the visuals (game analysis) are wonderful; the program not only focuses upon strategy and sound positional play, but also has included chess history that brings to life the great chess masters of the past such as Paul Morphy and Alexander Alekhine.

I'm not even through the entire course, and I've noticed that my game has already improved, as the new insights I've gained have brought me to higher plateaus of understanding concepts which always seem to have eluded me.

If you love chess, and like me, you're good for an amateur but also frustrated with a leveling out of your rank, you may gain some valuable insights from this program.

Jeremy Silman is a great chess coach who offers insight and encouragement at all levels as he develops layer after layer of chess strategy. I could never remember openings or gambits and Mr. Silman's lectures explain why that is less important than recognizing certain key positions. Given layouts close to key configurations, Mr. Silman offers tips on how to modify them into winning positions. My appreciation for the history, great players, and richness of the game have been greatly enhanced by the DVD/book combination.

I know the rules but I need a strategy. So I bought episode 5, combinations and Kings in check. This was a great video and gave me hope to be able to play better. It is not necessarily how many combinations you can think of, but more of recognizing patterns. Here you learn to recognize some basic patterns that lead to material advantage or check mate situations. I thought it was well taught and having the visuals to go along with it are very helpful, as opposed to trying to learn from a book, flipping pages back and forth. Thank you Jeremy.
