I am a pale, pale lady with majorly sensitive skin who has used probably every sunscreen product on the planet, because I love the outdoors. I've done cheap (Target, Neutrogena, Coppertone, Bullfrog), expensive (Shiseido, La Roche-Posay, MD Solarsciences, Obagi), chemical sunscreens, physical sunscreens, natural/organic sunscreens, gels, creams, sprays- you name it. Before I found this my go-to had been Banana Boat Kid SPF 50, which works really well, but leaves some major white residue on your skin and everywhere else. But it worked, so I stuck with it. Until now.
This is the best. I bought it for a trip to Mexico and managed, for the first time in my life, to come back from vacation without a burn. It worked all day from one application during a completely cloudless week on the beach, even after multiple trips into the ocean. It smells pretty decent (though my one wish would be that there was a fragrance-free option). It's not too greasy and there is very minimal skin to clothing transfer. And the best part- I didn't end up looking like I was signing up for kabuki theater.
It's pretty hard when you're super-pale to find a sunscreen that you can apply and forget about all day, not having to constantly worry about reapplication, trying to find a shady spot, or looking like you've just brushed white paint all over your body. I think I just found a secret weapon.

We have 4 people in our family. Two of them have fair skin and 1 of them had melanoma. We pay very close attention to skin care in the summer, escpecially since we spend most days in a pool, on a boat, or at the beach. Our daughter is the fairest skinned and we struggle every year with sunburns with her. We’ve tried every product out there and some are very good, but until now, none have been GREAT. Sun Bum is GREAT. We started using Sun Bum products this summer based on a friends recommendation. We are all in on Sun Bum products now...hair care, sunblock, etc. all of them are fantastic products. All other sunblocks will promptly be discarded. Safer than many others, great coverage & feel on your skin, smells amazing. If it’s trusted my lifeguards in Hawaii, that’s telling you something. And we can vouch for that. I’d also highly recommend the face 50...that has been a godsend for our daughter as she’s always in the water and rubbing the water away from her eyes...the sun bum 50 really stays on longest and provides the best protection we’ve found.

My long, long search for a safe sunscreen is over! I've been very discouraged by finding all the really safe ones tend to be pasty and white and require a lot of rubbing. This product does go on white, but is rubbed completely in in about two swipes. And the white means you can see where it landed when you sprayed it. Once you rub it in, it is very light, completely non-oily. I've never liked using sunscreens under makeup or applying it just to go out for a walk, but this is light enough that the skin can still breathe and I forget I am wearing it almost immediately. I have not fully tested its protection powers, and will edit this if I am dissatisfied on that point.

edited to add: I've used this for a week now. Protection has been very good. I took more sun than usual, on first exposure and for three days, and never burned.

I’m really happy there’s a natural sunscreen in spray form! It’s very convenient and works well. My daughter is a fair skinned red head and this lasts for hours in the pool in mid afternoon sun without re-application. It seems to be running out pretty quickly though, not sure I can afford to use it all summer long. Also make sure to spray in the grass and away from things b/c it really sticks to and stays on them. I still see it on my garbage can and concrete on the patio after a few weeks and storms. Yet it rubs into the skin nicely and seems to wash off in the shower ok.

I love this sunscreen and have been carrying a can in my bag all this summer. To address a couple of common complaints:

“It’s not sheer at all”: “Sheer” does not mean the same thing as “clear,” people. This spray is white and absolutely does rub in to be sheer as advertised. It leaves a slight (“sheer”) white tinge after rubbing in, but it’s not super noticeable on my pale skin. It might be more problematic on darker skin tones. (Also, it should be noted that there is literally no such thing as clear mineral sunscreen- you will have to choose between a product like this and a clear one containing endocrine disruptors. I’d rather look a little pasty, personally.)

“My whole family used this and got burned”: You need to shake the can before spraying, as per the instructions. These sprays are made of zinc (the active, protective ingredient) in a liquid suspension. If you spray without shaking the can first, you risk getting all liquid and no zinc particles, and then yes, you will burn. I’m pretty sensitive and this sunscreen has not failed me yet.

“It’s hard to get off”: This is true. It is hard to get off. But why would you want a sunscreen to come off easily?? This stuff is water resistant to an impressive degree. In the evening if it takes a vigorous scrubbing to get it off, I consider the exfoliation a bonus.

Also, my nozzles have worked just fine and the cans last me quite a good amount of time.

So I'm pretty white (as in "the lightest shade of any/all makeup is still too dark for me" white). And I don't like using a lot of chemicals on my skin. But I want to get a nice "base tan" so I don't fry on my cruise. In my research (SO MANY HOURS of YouTube and reading, heavy research) I noted several, seemingly reputable, people mentioned this product. It seems like everyone that knew what they were talking about all said the same thing: it smells good, it works, it moisturizes pretty well, and it's not filled with a bunch of chemicals. I tried it on my first tanning experience (natural tanning, sun only) and I didn't get burned! (I only laid out for 40 mins--20 front/20back). That's a lot for me since my skin hurts on a walk from my car to the front door on a sunny day. So if you're mistaken for a daywalking vampire, could use baby powder as a foundation, and/or love to smell tropical, this is the product for you!

Red hair, hazel eyes, freckles.... I usually burn at the thought of being outside for more than 15 min!
And because that wasn't enough of a challenge, I have ridiculously sensitive skin. Hypoallergenic makeup makes me break out, and most cleansers leave me itchy dry. When Bullfrog quit making the sunscreen I had used since childhood, I panicked a bit.
I recently went on vacation in the deep south, spent 3 days outside and barely got a tan line!!
Even better - no rash. No sticky, tacky can't-touch-anything-for-fear-of-leaving-a-stain-residue. Very light coconut scent. The only challenge was the hotel floor (vinyl) ice rink after application. But it won't stop me from stocking up!

I will tell you I am very fair and on medication that makes me sensitive to the suns rays. I read review after review till I found this product which came with such high reviews from my fellow Amazonians, so I purchased it. LOVE, LOVE AND LOVE THIS PRODUCT! I was in the sun for about three hours and every where I put this product it did its job. My go to sunscreen this day going forward. My 5-year-old grand daughter used this product as well, same results after three hours and tons of pool time in Orlando Florida.

I love this product. I bought it for sun protection because I am using a product that has alpha hydroxy acid on my body. This moisturizer is lightweight yet it is very rich. It gives a beautiful sheen to the skin and without a white cast. I am a black women and that is one of the main problems with sunscreen for us. This brand knows how to do it. I have been using their Unseen face sunscreen for several months now and decided to see if they also had one for the body now that I am using the AHA. It was pricey , but you get so much and a little goes a long way. If you do a full pump be prepared to put it in several places before rubbing it in. A lot comes out with a full pump. I will never use anything else.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEE!!!! Started laser hair removal and I have to wear sunscreen daily. I picked this up after trusted recommendation from a reliable source. Extremely light weight and very spreadable (less product application). Has a handful of organic products including sunflower oil. Buy over and over again!

We live in Florida and wear sunscreen every day - no matter what we are doing. This is by far the best sunscreen we have tried! Not greasy at all. I put this on in the morning and have it on all day; it just feels like a regular, nice lotion but with amazing sun protection. My husband and kids love it, too.

I REALLY hope this review is helpful for someone on the bubble. I have red hair and very light and sensitive skin. I went to Hawaii two months ago, and I thought I would give this a try, and it was amazing! I had always used various sunscreens, but either they didn't give good protection, or if they did, when I washed my skin after being outside wearing it, I would get really itchy and uncomfortable skin.
Some Pros:
-Good protection! I was never once burned
-A little goes a long way
-Using a loofa and some body wash it comes off easily
-You don't feel like you have anything on

One of the biggest cons I kept seeing is "its too white, it doesn't blend well, its not made for dark skin"
YES it is very white, I agree, even on my pinkish skin it was very white, but if you take the time to massage it in for a few minutes, it does absorb and you can't see it. My friend who is very dark skinned used some and at first complained of the color but I told her to spend time rubbing it in, and a few minutes later she couldn't even tell. Another thing, in my opinion the fact that it does go on white and doesn't blend well at first is a good thing, you can see what you have covered and what you haven't. The amount of times I missed a spot is unreal.

ANYWAY, this is to protect you, not to look like an Instagram model 24/7
get it!

I think this may be the only sunscreen I continue to use if I can help it. I’ve had allergic reactions to some of the ingredients in Sun Bum and I prefer mineral based sunscreen, so I’ve been on the hunt for a decent price mineral based hypoallergenic sunscreen that works well, and this is my favorite. I frequently use both this sunscreen and ThinkBaby sunscreen and love them both, but this one wins for several reasons:

-This sunscreen is truly odorless, no scent at all. Not the usual potent sunscreen smell or any other fragrances to mask the sunscreen smell. Love it since I’m someone who has to wear sunscreen year round and I don’t love smelling like I’m heading to the beach in January.

-This rubs in very well and doesn’t leave the white glow that some other mineral based sunscreens have. It seems to provide just as much protection as the others, I’ve had no issues with burning faster with this sunscreen.

-The UV color changing bottle seems kind of gimmicky but I seriously do notice that I remember to reapply more often because of the bottle changing color.

That all being said, if you have any adverse reactions to this, I recommend also trying ThinkBaby (or they have a ThinkSport line as well, but ThinkBaby has a mild citrus scent that I really like and it works just as well for adults as children). I have a 9 month old with very sensitive skin and have used both Blue Lizard and ThinkBaby on his skin with no adverse reactions at all. I always check sunscreens against the EWG sunscreen guide, and both Blue Lizard and ThinkBaby were given scores of 2/10 (1 is the best score possible, 10 is worst) which is pretty impressive. Most of the mineral sunscreens that are scored 1 are significantly more expensive than either Blue Lizard or ThinkBaby.

Here is my technique for applying:

1. Lather on hands
2. "Pat" hands all over where you want to cover
3. Start gently rubbing in.

This allows for even coverage without waste!

I love this product. It doesn't go on like a "normal" lotion but it does go on pretty easily if you use my trick! I work on a farm in the summer and have no problems using this. (I am fair skinned and it takes me about a month to build up a tan.)

First, my motivation for buying this product: protecting coral reefs. I am a scuba diver and snorkeler, and I want to keep being able to enjoy beautiful reef systems. If I am sitting by the pool, I will use whatever I have laying around, but that's for a different time.

I have tried a lot of reef-safe mineral sunscreens in my day. I think this is the best I have tried, and here is why:

- It comes in a spray, when many don't
- The nozzle doesn't clog, and it sprays consistently
- It rubs in pretty easily

A note on the last bullet: my friends who don't seem to care about killing coral reefs always make fun of my mineral sunscreen. "Hey, are you almost done with your mime makeup?!" In my experience, ANY mineral sunscreen will leave behind SOME white residue, or it won't work! I do find that the Sun Bum spray leaves less than most!

This is a great product that helps keep my skin and the environment healthy, now if was only a LITTLE cheaper!

Jason Green

This is a mineral sunscreen so obviously it needs to be reapplied frequently and you need to limit contact with clothing, especially dark colors, but it was the best mineral sunscreen I've ever used. I have fair skin and I burn easily but I had no issues with the protection this sunscreen provided. I found applying it in circles along my body with quick sprays and then rubbing to the rest of my skin worked best for conserving how much I used and reducing the white cast that all mineral sunscreens should have.

On a side note, it is disturbing how many people complain about having to wash their clothes when using a mineral sunscreen. Yes, it may be less convenient to use mineral sunscreens than hormone disrupting based sunscreens but that's the price you pay for being a conscientious human being who tries to limit their impacts to the ecosystems we visit.

Don't hesitate to buy if you've been looking for a mineral spray. I used it all last summer and I'm a fair skinned lady that lives in my Arizona backyard with a pool for 5 months of the year. It works great. Rubs in better than any mineral cream I've used. A bit of whiteness remains but its 90% more clear than any of the other dozens of mineral creams I've tried.

Really fortunate to come across this sunscreen. It is a mineral sunscreen (uses zinc oxide instead of active chemicals) with UVA/UVB SPF 50 protection. It doesn't feel oily, and it rubs in almost perfectly clear. Easy and comfortable to wear. Biggest test was the kids, and they had no complaints!

Chel

It’s so hard to find good sunscreen that is totally gentle and still high SPF. Two Peas is a great choice when you want protection without harmful chemicals. I love that it is broad spectrum, water resistant, and I scented. It’s a thick cream and provides thorough coverage.

This sunscreen uses zinc oxide, so it does come with the characteristic white hue, but it is a great choice for babies & little kids or people with sensitivities or allergies. It’s also a really nice choice for a primer under makeup. It dries down nicely and when you need SPF 50 for a day in the sun, this could add an undetectable layer under your foundation!

Angi

My daughter has very sensitive skin. Every sunscreen we try has caused her skin to become do irritated that she cries when we try to reapply throughout the day because it hurts. I've bought all of the brands (Avon, Burt's Bees, Neutrogena). This goes on soooo thick. To that point that you can no longer rub it in. I thought I was doing something wrong or applied too much (pea size amount is enough for the face). But I gave it a few minutes and it absorbed. She didn't burn at all and it never hurt so she had no issues letting me reapply. This was such a good purchase and w finally found the one that works. We'll worth the cost.

This Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion is a great, physical barrier, sunscreen that is safe for kids and adults alike.

Sunscreens come in two varieties - physical barrier and chemical. Physical barrier sunscreens are just what they sound like - they use minerals to physically block UV rays. Remember the old, white, zinc, sunscreens of our youth? This is zinc oxide, too, but in a formula that is sheer. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and render them harmless to skin however, the chemicals mimic hormones and there is concern about the long term effects of these chemicals on children. For that reason, I try to only use physical barrier sunscreens on children (and myself.)

This is a white lotion that is fragrance free so it has no scent. When rubbed in, it has only the faintest, white, cast. It is SPF 50 and is water resistant for up to 80 minutes so good for use in the pool or at the beach or when sweating. We have experienced no irritation from this product.

Do note that most people do not apply enough sunscreen. You need to use about a shot glass full to cover your body and face and you need to reapply regularly. Also, it should be applied 15 minutes before sun exposure.

I love this stuff. Completely safe and water resistant. Plus it's sheer!

UPDATE: My teen son went to the beach for the day for the first time this year with some friends. He applied this sunscreen (because I would obviously know if he didn't) but his friends chose not to. My son came back with no redness at all except a couple of tiny spots that he missed with the sunscreen but his friends were badly sunburned. This protected my son in and out of the water. (He reapplied several times during the day.) I am ordering more.

I bought this based upon the recommendation of a Youtuber I watch regularly. She's a staunch advocate for physical sunscreens. Personally, I like them too. I used Cerave SPF 50 Mineral stick prior to purchasing this. Still do for quick applications. However, being darker skinned (I'm black) means the white film produced by zinc oxide and mineral sunscreens in general can be EXTREMELY noticeable on my skin. Still yet, I wear it because, factually, mineral sunscreen is superior in every way to chemical.

However, I relented because there are some situations where mineral sunscreen is a no-go: important meetings, etc. In those cases, I've discovered Coppertone Ultra Guard 70, which I also reviewed specifically to put forth the perspective of someone who's darker skinned. That is a great chemical sunscreen, however, after multiple uses, I find that I get a lot of burning and irritation on my face. Sadly, I've had to stop using it after initially loving it so much.

So, now I find myself back at the drawing board searching for a sunscreen with low to minimal obvious white residue, but also effective and non-irritating. As I said, based off a recommendation, I purchased this on a whim with low expectations because I already use a lot of physical sunscreens and 9 times out of 10 they leave an obvious white film (Personally, I hate the term white cast).

So, I tried this one and it does apply white, as to be expected, but once it dries the white film is much less noticeable--tolerable even! It doesn't apply smoothly. I have to use lotion first to be able to spread it more evenly on my face. So far, so good! I'll see if this review changes over a couple of weeks. It's nice to feel good, conscientiously, about the type of sunscreen I'm applying again.

I'll update if I experience any drastic changes.

First off, note an odd regulatory situation means that sunscreen in the US can only use chemicals from >30 years ago. Many are both not that effective at preventing UV damage and are known to have harmful side effects but are grandfathered in, with stricter regulations precluding the approval of compounds safer than those grandfathered in. Synthetic chemicals with vastly superior UV protection and better safety profiles are widely available outside the US and are a better choice than this for most (if you look for Drometrizole Trisiloxane or Mexoryl XL there are probably sellers on Amazon, likely at ridiculously inflated prices) - I normally stock up on business travel to the EU, but that's obviously not happening right now.

Without more modern chemistry, inelegant solutions of smearing gobs of reflective white stuff on one's skin is the best you can get, which is what this sunscreen is. If you have any significant melanin/skin color you will look somewhat ridiculous if using the correct amount. It is very difficult to remove - just soap and water won't get it off; you'll need to use an abrasive compound.

Those two caveats are also primary selling points - this provides good UVA/UVB protection (much worse than modern chemical sunscreens, better than chemical sunscreens you can get in the US), and is extremely water resistant. Realistically unless you're swimming a single application will probably last an entire day.

As such I can recommend this if you're cool w/ the downsides, or want a sunscreen w/ the best safety profile. It's still possible to get modern chemical sunscreens shipped to the US (w/ delays of weeks) and they are barely more expensive than this, so I'd recommend that in general unless you're pressed for time.

Reviews from Real Users

Yeah-Nah

I had a recent issue with my EltaMd UV Physical Tinted Facial Sunscreen and contacted EltaMD directly to inquire about an interaction I was having with this and another product - together, they created a funky odor. I just stopped using the other product with it and all is well. Since I saw reviews calling the product shipped from Amazon a fake, I asked Elta's representative and she said that it is SAFE to get this product from Amazon as long as it isn't coming from a third party seller. EltaMD actually sends Amazon this product directly to sell on the Amazon website. When you purchase this product, look just above the Add to Cart button and make sure it says "ships from and sold by Amazon". If it says that, it is the real thing. This is one of the best products out there for protecting your face from the harmful effects of the sun. It is not greasy in the slightest. The tint is light. It won't totally cover blemishes but gives just enough coverage to brighten and protect your face without feeling heavy or feeling sticky. It looks really natural on me and I forget it's there. I have rosacea but love going for walks. Because I have thick hair, hats are uncomfortable so I really needed an effective zinc-based sunscreen to protect my face when out in the day. This product is the best I've ever used. Don't hesitate to buy it. Just make sure it says "shipped and sold by Amazon" before you click. If you are still concerned, contact EltaMD through their website for confirmation.

I hate to be too forward, but I am no stranger to tinted sunscreens. I have been on a quest for years to find the perfect sunscreen - not greasy, not smelly, not too chemicall-y, one that won't break me out, one that doesn't make me look like a Cheetoh or magnify my crow's feet - you know, the small things.

I have tried everything from Paula's choice, Coola, CotZ, Kiehls, and many I have forgotten the names of, but it all equals up tp a veritable fortune spent on the sunscreen lottery. This quest, unfortunately, has been like trying to find a unicorn, the Holy Grail, or the perfect cheeseburger - elusive...until now.

I have fair skin, and as I age (over 40), my skin shows sun spots, continues to break out, and overall, takes the "graceful" out of my aging process. Instead of asking my dermatologist what she recommended, I finally asked what product she couldn't live without. Until she mentioned EltaMD, I had never heard of the product. Although I thought the price was high ($30 for the tube), considering the fortune I'd spent in disappointing products previously, this was a drop in the bucket, so I decided to take the chance. I am so glad I did.

Unlike the review claiming the product was fake, the product I received was authentic. It was, as they say in the formulation industry, an "elegant" formulation. Easy to apply, not greasy, or streaky, and dried to a matte finish without any hint of chemical smell. I apply the EltaMD as the last step over a SkinMedica skin care regime, and I couldn't be happier with the coverage or the product. Fewer breakouts, too, than when I was using other brands.

Bring it on, aging!

I have acne, rosacea, and generally VERY sensitive skin. Through MUCH trial and error with chalky zinc based sunscreens, tinted sunscreens, greasy sunscreens, and everything in-between I found Elta MD. Now I can't use any of their combination sunscreens (I turn BRIGHT red) and I can't use their oil free tinted mineral sunscreen (NEVER Dries down) but this is silky and moisturizing without greasy, sticky grossness:)
Because I want reapplication benefits I tend to apply first thing in the morning and once set (15-20 min) I apply a mineral powdered sunscreen over it and every 2-3 hours to keep up the sun protection. This does work under makeup as long as you wait for it to set (what you should be doing with ALL sunscreen). I still set makeup with mineral sunscreen powder and reapply 3-4 times per day. Side note, you may not really need foundation unless you have a lot to cover. I found it makes my skin look even and supple and I can get away without foundation most of the time.

Honest review here.

I struggled, especially living in Florida, finding a chemical free safe sunscreen that I loved. I have kids and want to make sure they are not only protected from the sun but also from harsh chemicals. I recently read an article (you can find if you google Dr. Axe sunscreen) and it has a list of EWG rated (good ones) of mineral and non mineral based sunscreens. There were very few spray ones on the list and this was one of them.

I can attest it works great but must apply well (as with any sunscreen). I love that it is spray and 50 and last for up to 80 minutes of swim time. SO, it's also waterproof! It was in my opinion one of the best on the list. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

I spent a lot of time looking for a sunscreen that followed my “rules” and this one fits them all!

-30spf or better
-cruelty free
-reef safe
-non comedogenic (won’t clog pores/cause breakouts)
-dries clear
-feels light
-wears well under makeup
-costs less than $20

After using it for about a week, I HIGHLY recommend this sunscreen. I don’t often leave reviews but this product deserves some love!

I got this specifically to use in my face but now I’m spraying it on my arms and chest too since it is not overly expensive. One thing I’d recommend is to follow the instructions on the label to first spray the product onto your hands and then apply to the face. It has a very strong fume of alcohol but dries very quickly. I overapplied the first time I wore it and it burned my eyes—especially when I worked out and got sweaty!😅 I wore less the next day and was careful to avoid the skin around my eyes and have not had any further problems. It also mildly tingles/burns my skin when I first apply but I think it’s because I have very sensitive skin—it does not make me red and the discomfort goes away within a few seconds.

The other perk of this product is that it truly dries clear and leaves my skin looking dewy but not oily. It also wears well under makeup.

Great product!!

I love this sunscreen. I have tried every spray on sunscreen brand out there, however, my children all have very sensitive skin and would develop a minor rash(some worse than others) from all other brands of spray-on and lotion sunscreen(even the ones "for sensitive skin"). Alba Botanica's proves to be the most effective and safe for my children! It protects against sun damage, is easy to use, and does not cause any rash, it smells good, too. Will continue to purchase this product and only this product!

So support depends on your product type and services. You should define the product and how consistent customer support you will be needing or not.
