There Is No New Year, There Is Just A New Day

Are you ready for the New Year?

“Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to.” – Bill Vaughan

Before I begin, I wanted to say a few grateful words to each and every one of my loyal readers.

Thank you.

Thank you for sticking by me throughout all of the days, weeks, and months of 2011.

Thank you for repeatedly returning to view the latest published article, even if there was a gap of over a week between articles.

Thank you for writing comments, sharing my work on social media platforms, and supporting my writing even when I didn’t feel passionate about this whole blogging thing.

And thank you for downloading the Value 101 eBook and signing up to the Unlock The Door newsletter – I promise there will be an newsletter update going out on New Year’s Eve, detailing my plans for 2012.

There will also be the final Unlock The Door blog article of 2011 released on New Year’s Eve, which will detail a round-up of the year Unlock The Door had, it’s highs and lows, and a few more “Thank you’s” because I feel they need to be given.

But for this article, I wanted to provide you with a few words about the new year coming up. I wrote a similar post to this one last year, around the same time – you can check it out here.

In that post, I wrote about different ways to bring in the new year. For this post, I’d like to approach the topic from a different angle. You see, I look forward to the start of a new year – the possibilities that we always dream of seem more real at the start of a new chapter. It’s like we believe we can actually achieve some of the more far-fetched goals we set ourselves.

However, the past 12 months have taught me a lot about myself and my life. Even though 2012 will consist of 366 days rather than the standard 365, I still believe that it’s much more efficient to treat each day as a single opportunity to act, behave, and think in the ways we want, and to model our lives by our own choosing.

The New Year’s Mistake

December 31st of the previous year is usually the date when most people have made their New Year’s resolutions, if not before. I have a couple in mind which I will be finalising on New Year’s Eve, and I reckon there will be one or two things that you will want to think about as we gear up for the New Year?

Whether you have or not, you’re still going to be making special effort in seeing out 2011, right? Most people celebrate the passing of 2011, the beginning of 2012, and the chance to right the world’s wrongs once and for all, right?

Actually we don’t. We usually focus on having a good time with the people we like and love, and forgetting about anything else. I’ve been guilty of this in the past.

But how often do we think about January 1st, the day after the party? How often do we treat January 1st as the perfect starting point to go after our goals and tackle our dreams?

The short answer is – we don’t. New Year’s Day is used as a recovery day from the night before, and the only productivity we get done is the clearing up.

This is where we fall down. The first day of the year is the best opportunity to begin our projects and ambitions because it is the first day. It’s the first chance to show ourselves and everyone what we intend to do. And yet we don’t even bother.

The first few days of January slip by, and it’s business as usual. Days turn into weeks, then Winter becomes Spring, and before we are even aware of what’s happening, the chance to change our lives and circumstances has gone. Another chance becomes just another year gone by.

January 1st Is The Best Opportunity

When it comes to goals, what matters to us is that we see some results. Results motivate us, they prove to us that our efforts aren’t in vain. If we don’t see results, then we wonder why we should even bother trying, and the discipline and motivation quickly disappear. Without results, there is no fight.

With that in mind, when do you think is the best time to see results? Exactly – on the first day that we start the project. What better way to kick-start our goal than to see that our efforts are working out almost immediately.

Here are some examples of ‘first-day success’:

  • Deciding to adopt a new diet, and chucking away some snacks on January 1st.
  • Deciding to exercise more, and going for a brief jog on January 1st.
  • Deciding to read more, and going through your dusty book collection on January 1st.
  • Deciding to get in touch with long-lost friends, and phoning one of them on January 1st.

You’re not dumb, I’m sure you get the idea. Taking some action on the first day of the New Year means that we get our dreams off to a flying start. We can see results almost immediately, and this empowerment can carry us through the rest of the week, inspiring similar results. And with more results, our appetite for our goals keeps on increasing.

So start on January 1st. Start fresh, and be ready for the change. Be ready for January 1st 2012 to be the best January 1st yet!

I usually don’t have New Year’s resolutions because I do try to take each day at a time. Did I eat too much and exercise between Thanksgiving and Christmas; absolutely, but fortunately I work out on a regular basis so I will get everything back in sync pretty quickly.

As far as business goes, the wheels have already been in motion to take advantage of opportunities in 2012, so I would never wait until Jan 1 to make it happen.

However, the New Year does lend itself for a unit of measurement and if you are going to make changes, Jan 1 is the perfect day to get started.

Those are my thoughts for today; that’s all I have to offer………:)

Hi Bill,

Thank you for offering your thoughts – they are always welcome!

What opportunities have you got lined up for 2012 Bill? Do we get to see any of them on BillDorman.me? :-)

My big opportunities right now are in the offline world; so I’m just going to keep writing for now (just hanging around which I can do well) and see where it takes me, if anywhere. Maybe something will jump up and knock me upside the head…………:)

I have often found that the best opportunities have been those that jumped up and caught me by surprise Bill ;-)

You have a very good point.
In the past, I have not been one for making too many New Years resolutions. I guess it never really seemed to matter to me. Maybe, I saw the next day as just another day. Possibly, I was not thinking too much about my future.
When I did make New Years resolutions they never seemed to “stick.”
We say were going to stop smoking cigerettes, and then smoke half a pack before the night is over. We say we are going to change our eating habits, but end up at McDonnalds. We say were going to start saving money, but blow it partying all night.
I am grateful I am alive. I feel like a new person, or maybe, I am just starting to find myself. I like your advice and I plan on making my New Years resolution on the 1st.

Thanks for your advice!

God bless,
William Veasley

Hi William,

Each to their own, and if you take each day at a time then there isn’t anything wrong with that. Everyone has their own way of living.

Let us know if you decide on making any New Year’s resolutions – we’d be eager to hear them :-)

I usually don’t do stuff on 1 January, to me this is a day I just relax, and don’t have any plans. Next year will be different. As you said, it’s the perfect day to start something, mostly because it’s the first day of the year (and it’s easy to track everything and we feel full of energy because a new year means new possibilities).

I’m going to start the new year with a promise to myself, and that’s a promise that 2012 will be my best year ever :)

I have several big plans, and I’ll be revealing them as soon as they’re ready.

Here’s to a wonderful year for you and Sly Marketing :-)

I haven’t been planning it for long, but about a month. My number one focus for 2012 will be to get my book published, but I’m going to reveal some other interesting plans during January, as soon as I feel that I can tell people about them.

Do you have any exciting plans for 2012?

I want to take UTD to the next heights, but I’m not precisely sure how I’m going to do that right now. Once something concrete is formed, I’ll let people know :-)

I’m sure you’re going to have a fantastic 2012, and that UTD will be one of the most inspiring blogs ever. Just keep doing what you’re doing.

I’m going to write a book for the Kindle, and that’s going to make a huge difference for me. The Kindle market is huge. You could write a book for Kindle too, that would make 2012 even more fantastic :)

I couldn’t agree more. It’s a common practice for people, including myself to make New Year’s Resolutions and still not stick to it. Instead of New Year’s Resolutions, or celebrating a new year, why not make one for the next week? Or the next day? Making the span of time shorter gives it the urgency and the importance that you really have to do it tomorrow, if not you would have sinned against your soul, or something. hah Nice read, Stuart. Have a swell day, week, month and year ahead.

Hi Josh,

Indeed, shortening the timespan that we have to do something means we devote more mental energy to it. However, it’s best not to set too many goals – if we use too much mental energy, we’re more likely to feel tired and drained. Balance is the key!

Take care Josh, enjoy the next few days :-)

Hey Stu,

Great post as always! ;-)

I agree. I usually don’t make New Years resolutions as I find it hard to stick to them, instead I tend to make ‘target’ plans for the year which seem more realistic and more likely that I’ll stick to them.

The only hopes I have in 2012 is that ‘Unlock the Door’ will continue to achieve greatness and make you thrive as much as it has this year and the other one is that we have yet another amazing year! I will continue to support you throughout, the way I have done this year.

Great job Stu – well done! :-)

Love you loads and loads xxxxx

Hello my dear!

Target plans sound good, especially as you have a year to achieve them – it’s long enough to reach some major goals, such as getting a new place to live ;-)

Thanks for all your support Sam, the post tomorrow will feature you :-)

Love you loads and loads too xxxxx

Hey, Stu!

This was a great line: “I still believe that it’s much more efficient to treat each day as a single opportunity to act, behave, and think in the ways we want, and to model our lives by our own choosing.”

I love the idea that January 1 is the real day to start moving toward our goals. If we never take action on the plans we lay at the end of the previous year, we will never realize the plans we took the time to map out. And the longer we wait to get started, the less likely we will ever start.

So I’m with you. January 1st is my start date for all the plans that are bubbling around in my head for 2012!

Thanks for the focus you offered us here, my friend!

Hello Stuart!

Grrreat post my friend!!

I passed on New Year’s resolutions a long time ago and it truly has made all the difference. I constantly update and revise goals and keep myself in check throughout the year. I think it’s vital to keep yourself in check and it helps when you share those with someone who can keep you on the path needed as well.

It’s been a great year watching you “meeting” you and watching you evolve Stuart! You have been a great inspiration to me personally and a true joy added to my 2011 … thank you! Thank you for being you and for being a rock-solid indidual, whom I have the utmost respect for!

Wishing you and Sam and all those you hold dear a very safe, very blessed, and very magical 2012!

Kindness and happiness always,

Elena

You are so right when you talk about results. I truly believe one needs to take baby steps. One needs to see results quickly because one didn’t set a goal too difficult..

Baby steps and consistently this will let you raise the bar…

Hi Jack,

Baby steps are the way forward, which is ironic considering we’re supposed to progress from baby steps as we get older! Still, life is full of paradoxes, and this is one of the major ones.

Love this.

The good thing is that is easier to remind yourself of the great things you did on 1st of January when things start falling apart somewhere in the third week of 2012.

I do believe that even though there is so much fun, reminiscence and merry on the 31st of December, a fraction of that day should be used to prepare for the great things we expect to achieve come 2012.

31st that’s the day to get on the seat and buckle up. 1st January – that’s the day to put one foot on the gas pedal and another on the break pedal.

Of course we know where our hands should be right?

Happy 2011 and 2012!

Hi Philos,

That’s an interesting way to look at it – using 31st December to buckle up for the ride of 2012. I like it, perhaps I’ll be mentally preparing myself on Saturday 31st December, thinking of all the good times lying ahead!

Hey Stuart,

I never keep resolutions for the New Year’s ever, because experience has told me that I have never kept it as efficiently I thought I would. As your title aptly mentions, I treat each day as it comes. if I want to change something, then I rather have it and start it right now, than wait for the 1st of January for it to happen.

How I look at it is that if we want to change something then why wait for a fresh year, just do it now. Although yes, the fact that a new year can usher in the feeling of changing things for the better and we can promise ourselves somethings which we have been thinking along for quite a long time. Whatever works for the person. It is an individual choice after all. And what better excuse than a whole new year all together!

Also, thanks for the reminder, this time I have lost touch with a couple of friends and I hope to call them on 1st of Jan to get back.

Here’s wishing you a lovely 2012, give my best wishes to Sam too! Also, hoping that 2012 bring much more success to UTD!

Take care!

Hi Hajra,

I hear what you’re saying – the reason why I said what I said was because of the timing of the post. A lot of people get ready for New Years then do nothing when the new year actually hits, so if they can get some form of traction on their goals when it’s January 1st, this will set up them well!

Thanks for the kind words, and I hope you bring in 2012 in style! :-)
