“Whether here or elsewhere, whether “on your own” or with a professional, whether with clergy or a therapist, keep on the path, take the next step, and then the next. One day, one step at a time, you will begin to see life differently, yourself differently, and others differently.” – Ken Wert
Today, I am thrilled to present another interview to you!
This is the next interview, featuring Ken Wert of Meant To Be Happy. If you wish to read up on previous interviews with Bryan Thompson and Tess Marshall, please click here.
Ken has recently been named the ‘Best Personal Development Blogger of 2011′ by the readers of Change Your Thoughts, and so I felt it appropriate to interview him. I am also honoured to have him here as he is an incredible gentleman and a kind soul. The blogging world is better off with him in it.
I hope you enjoy Ken’s thoughtful responses.
Stu: Why did you decide to build a blog, and why focus your efforts in the personal development niche?
Ken: First of all, I want to thank you for this opportunity to be interviewed by one of my favorite people online.
I guess in a lot of ways, it’s an extension of who I am. I love ideas. They matter. They have consequences in our lives. I love talking about great ideas and teaching them and wrestling with them in my own life.
So I guess what I’m saying is that blogging about happiness and character and personal growth is what I’m passionate about. I work at it and read the literature and teach it and talk about it in other settings. So in some ways, starting a personal development blog was an almost inevitable next step.
I also have an entrepreneurial spirit buried somewhere inside. I wanted to create something I could get excited about, that would be meaningful and that could, at least eventually, generate some extra income for my family. That, coupled with my love of writing, made a blog a seeming no-brainer.
Could you explain some of the inspiration behind ‘Meant To Be Happy’, and why you decided to use this theme as your blog?
Certainly. It’s as simple as truly believing people have great stores of untapped potential waiting to be discovered. I believe there are countless people living with varying degrees of unhappiness. That saddens me.
But I’ve found there are basic principles that are the building blocks of happiness. It’s something I’ve very literally studied for most of my life.
Also, to tell the truth, after a keyword search indicating millions of people searching for happiness every day and believing I’ve been blessed with some answers that would help that search, I thought the topic and I would make a nice match.
What would you say is the most important aspect of blogging?
I’m still new to the game here, so others would be much better qualified to answer this question. But it seems to me that if you don’t write content anyone else cares to read, it doesn’t matter how much SEO you know or how amazing your site looks, or how tantalizing your post titles are. It just won’t attract much long-term attention.
I also think that it’s not enough to be a good writer. You also have to have something of substance to write well about.
In other words, bad ideas will be an obstacle to great writing and bad writing will be an obstacle to great ideas. Both good ideas and good writing have to find some compatible blend for success.
Congratulations on being voted the No. 1 Best Personal Development Blog of 2011! Looking to 2012, do you have any future goals to build on your huge success?
Thanks, Stu. That means a lot to me. I have 4 blogging goals for 2012 (for now, anyway – I’m always open to adjusting them as I go):
1. Guest post as often as I can produce additional content (time constraints are real obstacles these days).
2. I just launched the first edition of my newsletter, “Meant to be.” I’ll continue to tweak it into something I hope will be an anticipated part of my subscribers’ lives and entice new readers to sign up as well.
3. I’m currently soliciting articles from bloggers on happiness for an ebook titled, Perspectives on Happiness to compile and start selling in 2012. I have a longer-term goal as well, that within 5 years, I’ll be doing this gig full-time.
4. I also hope to have opportunities to collaborate with others on a variety of projects. I’m really enjoying connecting with some pretty amazing people online.
There is one other goal I’m considering. I’ve done a lot of public speaking in other contexts and enjoy it. It would be pretty cool to do it in the personal development arena as well.
If you were to speak with someone completely new to personal development and self-help, how would you define happiness?
For me, the kind of happiness I speak of at Meant to be Happy is a state of being, rather than a fleeting emotion.
It’s the sense that life is good, that I like who I am, that there is meaning to my life and that I matter. It’s a state that lasts through periods of pain and difficulty too. It’s the natural result of the way I live and think and interpret life. It’s based on my fundamental beliefs and attitudes and perceptions about myself and others.
So happiness isn’t simply the result of having lots of fun or excitement. Those feelings end when the event that produced them ends. Rather, happiness is an inner sense of fulfilment or joy that permeates life whether or not external circumstances are just what you want them to be.
You say in your ‘About Me’ profile that you decided to ‘scratch the teaching itch’ and become a teacher in 2000. What made you reach that decision?
I was a 10-year veteran in another field working with abused children. I was married with a baby girl. Our little family was starting to grow. I knew that if I didn’t make the career change then, it would likely never happen. So I jumped at it!
If you could do one thing right now to improve your life, anything at all, what would it be?
That’s a good question, Stu. I must say that my life is pretty good. I eat well and work out regularly. I’m in good health. I love my family and they love me. I have a career I love. I think that in the balance, if I may say so, I’m a pretty decent guy as well. I have a rich spiritual and religious life and am grateful for more than I have time or space here to mention. I even have a new passion as a blogger! In a lot of different ways, my life feels deeply meaningful and significant. And really, I’m just a happy camper!
So I guess the one thing that would most improve my life would be to make a good living off blogging so I could do it fulltime. I love teaching passionately, but I’m afraid I’ve found a deeper love.
If you had 20 seconds to say whatever you wanted, and the whole world was listening, what would you say?
Character matters. Who you are at the very core of how you live your life, how you treat others, your integrity to universal principles of human decency matter. There is little in life more important than who you are and become deep inside. So go live a life of kindness and love and compassion and courage. Be humble and forgiving, grateful and honest and good. And in the end, you’ll be well on your way to a life of deep and abiding happiness as well.
Thank you for your time and insights Ken.

This is a great interview with an exceptional guest Stu!
Thank you for hosting Ken in the community today – I look forward to reading his blog and connecting with him on the social web : )

Great post Stu, Your questions were great! They helped to bring out a better picture of Ken for me. I read and enjoy both your blogs.
Ken, thanks for sharing your passion and clarity. You speak so well to what I aspire to in my life and blog. Thanks for giving me a role model.
Maybe it’s time for me to step up my game. Do either of you accept guest bloggers? I would love to have the opportunity.
Thanks for sharing,
Hey Brad!
I’m thrilled you enjoy our blogs. I’m a HUGE fan of Stu’s too.
I’m also glad my passion for what I write about shows through how I write it. It’s all very important to me. I’ve spent a life talking about these things in a variety of settings and now that I’m blogging about growth and development, I’m now able to reach people I would have never been able to reach before. To be able to improve a life even if only in some small way is very gratifying.
As for speaking well, I do it for a living. I have been accused of overkill before on several occasions, however! But I appreciate the compliment. I think we’re all role models to those in our spheres of influence. The question we want to always be asking ourselves as a way to gauge the impact we have on others is, “What am I a role model of?” Am I role modeling kindness and patience and decency? Or are we role modeling something much less? That, actually, would make for a great post. Hmmm.
Feel free to contact me by email and we can talk about guest post possibilities.
Thanks so much for the interest and kindness, Brad!

Hi Josh,
Not a problem – like with Tess’ interview, I tried to make it so that the blogger could reveal as much or as little as they liked. The questions were open-ended with enough room to explore.
Thanks for stopping by
Love this, Stu!
I resonate heavily with a lot of what Ken said. He and I feel quite similar. I love ‘success’ (but my definition of success is similar to Ken’s definition of happiness — a joyous state of being.
I’ve been blogging for a long time, but I’m ‘new’ too, I just launched my new brand
I adore ideas, character, and high-value content with substance.
So… what I’m saying is — thank you, thank you for introducing me to someone I resonate with, and looking forward to part 2 of “Taming The Voice” – keep rockin’!
Jason Fonceca recently posted..How Bad Do You Want It? [Intense Desire!]
Hi Jason!
That’s great that we resonate! (Hey, that rhymed!)
I LOVE the way you define success. Some people define it so narrowly that, one, it pigeon holes them into pursuing a very narrow vision of what life is supposed to be and, two, it makes failure more likely because of the narrow definition to what it is and what it takes to get it. But life is about family and relationships and human kindness and decency. It’s more about who we become than what we do or how much we acquire. The successful creation of a noble character is so much more important than the successful accumulation of stuff and large balance sheets.
Thanks so much for this, Jason! Keep resonating!
Ken Wert recently posted..Life can Hurt. But YOU Don’t Have to Indefinitely.
We’re definitely on the same page. Success is personal and as deep as a person wants it to be.
What I teach is a blend of both – I definitely LOVE, the successful accumulation of stuff and large balance sheets.
(I especially love your rhyme — I *adore* hiphop… I’ve even been in an awesome music video: http://youtu.be/_xy-nI9znBs )

Thanks so much Stu!
It was an absolute blast to shoot. I adore all art forms, and acting + performing feels FANTSTIC. My job was to ‘instigate’ and ‘generate anger’, and at the end I really got into it, and at one point Famous choked me in one of the takes lol.
Fortunately I’m just as good at ‘instigating’ success, appreciation and inspiration
Jason Fonceca recently posted..Get Ready For Ryze’s Successful Creation Post On FirepoleMarketing.com
Have to wait for later to check out the music video (I’m on a computer right now that blocks Youtube). But I agree with you about a blend of both. My only issue is when success is defined ONLY in financial terms. But looks like we see things very similarly here too.
I won’t likely be in a hiphop (or any other) music video soon, but I have dabbled in poetry in my younger guitar-playing song-writing days.
Ken Wert recently posted..Life 101: Life Lessons from a Decade of Teaching Teens
lol, awesome Ken!
Hehe, I love it. And you’re spot on, I’m not super enthused about success defined in purely financial terms, or purely spiritual terms. We live a life filled with both things, and a perceived ‘lack’ in any of them doesn’t really feel like success.
I’ve won poetry contests as well! Our commonalities grow
Rock on, man!
Jason Fonceca recently posted..The Difference Between Love, Romance, And Sexual Attraction

I write on stress and health issues for highly sensitive people and am one. When people have a challenging condition it can seem that somehow they were not destined to be happy. I happen to think otherwise.
Happiness really comes from being happy with yourself. For highly sensitive people who are highly empathetic that is a challenge. We are biologically wired differently because our nervous systems are different. We are like sponges for all the good and bad in the world. That means that we have a harder time processing information and a harder time feeling good. The upside is that we are often more conscientious because our integrity is the only way not to compromise our empathetic natures and create more pain for ourselves and others.
HSP’s can become happy, but we certainly work for it.
Thank you so much for sharing that Maria.
I LOVE your way of thinking about the challenge of happiness, that it is available to all, but just takes more work overcoming a unique set of wiring issues. Life just isn’t fair. There are people born into crack-addicted families. There are children born into abusive homes. And there are children born wired with a much more sensitive disposition. But while the particular set of obstacles may be different one person to another, obstacles exists in most peoples’ lives. The only question worth asking, it seems to me, is HOW to best overcome or cope with or accept the obstacle and learn to be happy anyway.
My experience has led me to believe happiness waits at the intersection of the way we think and interpret life, what we believe about life, ourselves and others and what we do, how we live, our character and integrity to values and meaning and purpose we carve out of life. This is a hard task for most people. You have a hurtle set a little higher than most, but have the added blessing of being able to grow more and learn more and become more for the higher climb required of you! Muscles in the body and in the mind and soul grow best when challenged!
Thanks again for sharing your heart and circumstances with us, Maria. It truly means a lot to me.
Ken Wert recently posted..Life can Hurt. But YOU Don’t Have to Indefinitely.
I appreciate your comments. I think often we have been taught that happiness comes from participating in the human circus called society and success when really it is much simpler and more lovely than that.
All the best.
I so agree with you! I teach economics as a high school teacher and have no problem with business and financial success. Jobs are created, lives are improved, economies are stimulated, goods and services are made available. While there can be a seedy dark side to it all, the benefits are huge. But when society too narrowly defines success to mean ONLY the number of zeros at the end of your bank statement or how well you draw others’ attention in that circus you mention, that’s when things are askew and other parts of life become minimized and pushed to the margins of daily living to the long-term detriment of both the person pursuing the narrowly defined success and society at large.
Thanks so much for your clear thinking here, Maria. I love it!
Ken Wert recently posted..Life can Hurt. But YOU Don’t Have to Indefinitely.
A wonderful and magical conversation taking place here – love it!
Hi Maria,
I have heard a little info about HSPs, and they have intrigued me to the point where I’m considering testing myself to see if I fall into that category. I seem to share a few characteristics such as the need to limit social interaction.
Thanks for sharing this comment – I found it useful in more ways than one
You should check it out. HSP’s have nervous systems that take in stimulus like sponges and we become easily overwhelmed which means we need to decompress a lot. It is a biological condition. Many people think that being an HSP is purely emotional but it is not – although we can be emotional.
There is good information on the web. Elaine Aron has written books about it, which are very helpful and has a website: http://www.hsperson.com. You can check out my site as well: http://www.hsp-stress-relief.com.
Once you know if you have HSP characteristics you can devise ways to handle it that can make your life more pleasurable.
Thanks for the extra information Maria, and for sharing the links! I’ll head over to Elaine’s site first, then your own – can’t wait to discover some new information

You are one of those rare gems that add light and life to a world often in need of such a good jump start!
What’s interesting about tapestries is the underside of them. They are often a tangled mess beneath and a work of art on top. And that’s the truth about character too. We work to overcome nature and temptation and pride and selfishness. That’s the messy underside. The beautiful side of character is the decency and kindness and love and courage that increases in our lives had we not done the messy work of working at it underneath.
You make me smile as well, Elena! And I thank you for that!

Awesome Interview!
Reading is the best way to improve writing, at least in my opinion. This year I am making more time to read because I have been finding much value in it. Reading is helping my writing, along with school and writing in general.
I think that in this time period, reading is becoming a lost craft. Everybody wants to watch T.V all day or play video games, but not read a good book. I am also starting to find a lot of peace and happiness in my reading time because it puts me in a good mood.
We can not be good bloggers without good reading habits. ( :
Ken: Have you noticed positive results from your guest posting? Is it hard for you to find the time for guest articles and managing your own blog?
Stu: Have you been guest posting much lately?
God bless,
William Veasley
Hi William! I remember a college friend of mine who wanted to be a writer who told me his professor had told the class the best writers are also readers and that you will never become a good writer unless you also read. Personally, I’m a pretty voracious reader. Can’t get enough of it. I have a home library of, well, my wife says way too many books. Last time I counted, I think it was something like 1,000 books. It’s likely a bit higher than that now, but the point is that I do an awful lot of reading.
As far as guest posting, yes, it is very hard to find time. A few things that seem to have helped me is to write a post that may have 12 or 14 different steps or methods etc. of maybe 2,000 words or so, then cut it in half, come up with a different title, post one at home and send one away as a guest post. I always add a link to the guest post and advertise it as a companion piece to the guest post. That’s what I did with my post on Pick the Brain.
Thanks for coming by and taking interest in the interview. Stu does some incredible work here!

Really nice interview. Stuart, thanks for interviewing Ken!
Ken, I really appreciate your humbleness. And I agree real happiness is a way of being. May we all experience real happiness and joy, and not have to depend on external things that are here one moment and gone the next.
Thank you, Hiten! That’s so kind of you to say. Someone once said that humility is the hardest virtue to acquire because as soon as you have a little of it, you quickly become PROUD that you’re humble.
I really like the way you said that happiness is internal, that it should “not have to depend on external things that are here one moment and gone the next.” So true! External things are here one minute and gone the next. But happiness doesn’t have to be. It can sit with us, be a reflection of an internal condition, a state that transcends circumstance.
Thanks for adding that, Hiten. I really appreciate it.
