“It’s when ordinary people rise above the expectations and seize the opportunity that milestones truly are reached.” – Mike Huckabee
This is my 100th published post on Unlock The Door, and it feels good.
First off, thank you for coming to read this post today – whether you have recently discovered Unlock The Door, or you’ve been mad enough to stay with me from the very beginning, thank you anyway. It’s your support that keeps this place alive.
I was thinking about celebrating this milestone, and that Unlock The Door ought to be given a shake-up so that I can announce my serious intentions to the world. Well, I don’t plan on celebrating any more (other than the thank you), I do want to share some intentions with you.
The Vision Ahead
How often do we enter the blogging game with the aspirations to make money online, or to have a safe place to journal our thoughts, or to connect with people around the world, or to share our favourite links and material? I’d say it’s pretty often – in fact, I’d say these four reasons represent 90% of the blogs today. The only differences are those who have turned professional and their blogs have transformed into businesses, such as ProBlogger, CopyBlogger, and Smart Passive Income.
That’s where I want to be.
I want to be in a position where I can make enough money to live from what I love. I want to be able to turn my ‘non-paying love’ of helping others into a ‘paying love’ where I’m consistently learning more about the art of helping others, and more about myself. And the best part of all of this? I believe it’s entirely possible.
My friend Arvind Devalia recently posted about youth not being a barrier to greatness, and I completely agree with him. I’m 25 years old, and it’s been just over 4 years since I had my ‘awakening’. A lot has changed in those 4 years, but I feel deep down in my heart that a whole load more can change, and will change in the months and years to come.
I don’t want to remain stationary in life, and I certainly don’t want to be in a situation where this blog hasn’t made any income whatsoever by its second birthday. I’ve already been blogging for over a year, and I no longer feel that it’s just a hobby for me to share my thoughts every so often. I now view this website as a business model, one which will serve as a platform for me to align my current life with the life I was meant to lead.
I guess the ultimate goal here is to live a life of happiness.
Examples Of Happiness
That ever elusive feeling, happiness, is what I base my thoughts and actions on. If what I’m doing, or what I’m thinking, isn’t bringing me happiness, then I must look to it and figure out why. There’s no time to waste on doing or thinking that which leads me away from my true alignment – life is too precious to waste.
Another friend of mine, John Sherry, recently made the decision to quit blogging. If you have the chance, head over to the post and wish him well in his journey.
Although I feel sad to see him go, I completely honour and respect his decision because it will bring him happiness. John realised that his true path lay elsewhere, away from blogging. I’d imagine it was a hard decision for him to take, but sometimes these decisions are unavoidable. We must find the courage within us to deal with them directly.
But sometimes we can find happiness not through tough decisions, but from other people. Sometimes, we meet people who bring out the best in us, and the decision to spend time with them, perhaps romantically, infuses our lives with happiness. This has happened with my girlfriend Sam, and I.
In fact, Sam was very kind to write up a short piece on her happiness and reveal how she found it. If you wanted to compliment her for it, visit her Twitter or Facebook profiles. Here it is:
“How do we know when we’re truly happy? Many people see happiness in different ways. It can affect our day to day lives and is measured by how we truly feel on the inside, but also on the outside. For example, we might display a constant smile or even have a change of mood. People have their own views and have their own ways of showing happiness.
Happiness can also be found when we’re with people, like finding that special person in our life. I have recently experienced this and I know I am truly happy as he is all I can think about and he knows how to make me smile when I’m ill or feeling down. It’s about knowing that this special person will be there when you need them the most. This is the same for family too, we all need our family around and we can’t live without them. It can also be related to hobbies or sports that you love and make you happy. Really, it can be anything you like!
When I think about the signs to look for happiness, I don’t think there is a real answer to this. You just know when you’re truly happy as you feel different, and perhaps act different. There are no real signs to look for, just individual feelings and emotions. People perceive happiness in many ways, and I feel happiness is something we should all experience. Life is so much better if we’re happy and this makes the world a much better place.”
The Next 100?
So what happens next? What happens for the next 100 posts?
In an ideal world, I’d say that I gain an incredible amount of subscribers from my posts here and elsewhere, I’d start generating at least a liveable income from my ventures here, and I’d have written an eBook or two. However, the ideal world isn’t completely in reality, although I believe in my ability to make a lot of this happen.
Instead, I’ll predict now that I will continue to write here and that there will a 200th post. I predict that I’ll continue to have fun with UTD, in one form or another.
And most importantly, I’ll predict that I will do what I can to align myself with my true path. Because that’s where happiness lies.

Congrats Stu,
100 posts. WOW. Still i have long way to go to even reach there. Although my niche is completely different from yours still it always feels good to read your posts.
I can understand the feeling that you get when you decide to do something that really matters to you. There is lot of hard work involved and you may not receive appreciation everytime you post, but still achievements like this do matter a lot.
Its your day. Enjoy. And keep writing the good stuff.

Stu — congrats on hitting this milestone. I’ve only been visiting this site for a few weeks and already have a lot of respect for what you do. One thing to ponder as you chart out your next moves: there’s often a thin line between making money doing what we love to do and not enjoying it anymore because we’re stressed about making money. I went into newspaper journalism because I love writing; after a half-dozen years of grinding out articles every day, I barely felt like writing e-mails to friends. I switched into a different career that still heavily involves writing but not in the same draining way, which has allowed me to write the stuff I really enjoy — essays and a book on tapping into personal potential — without worrying about what that stuff pays. Which is good, because it doesn’t pay well! Anyway, I have no doubt you’ll figure out how to stay on the right side of that line. Looking forward to following your journey.
Hi Stephen,
I hear you – I’ve already felt myself wavering on both sides of that very fine line! I have been writing for a long time now, and on occasions it has felt like becoming a chore, and on other occasions it has felt like it’s been taking over the rest of my life.
I’ll take what you advise onboard, those are some wise words!
Thanks for commenting Stephen
Hi Stu,
Congrats on reaching 100 posts! Keep on reaching for your dreams and happiness. I agree with Depak Chopra that happiness is the realization of successively more meaningful goals. So it is an ever growing and changing target.
Congrats with Sam too.

Hey Stu,
I’m just about to write a post on the theme that you discuss in this post. Basically, we’re all openly coming out and admitting that a blog is a business, and has to be treated that way. From my experience with marketing, the best thing that you can do is continue to create valuable products and really push to build your email list. Some fellow-bloggers might find it intrusive, but so what, they aren’t necessarily your customers. I just think that everyone wraps the blogosphere in cotton wool, like it’s this lovely, innocent place where everyone wants to help everyone else. This isn’t really true, most people want to use their blogs to build a business.
I understand why John has quit blogging, I’m just gonna head over to that post after I finish this comment. It is a huge time investment, and not an easy way to make money, but it can be done. You’re a really nice, genuine guy and have a great blog, just don’t be shy to be more aggressive in your marketing to get those opt-ins. Hope all is good with you brother, we’ll catch up soon for sure.
Robert recently posted..Is blogging just a bunch of crap?
Hi Robert,
It’s good to connect with you again! I understand a lot more about blogging, which is what’s lead to my ‘evolution’ in my mentality. Others have also realised what blogging involves, and have decided to step away before it’s too late. I completely respect this decision as everyone has their own lives to lead. But I’m not stepping away just yet
Thanks for your support amigo
Hi Stu! Congratulations on your 100th post! It’s exciting! I like how you see your future: ” I will do what I can to align myself with my true path.” That’s the only way to go. Keep up the great work!

I’ve said it before, but I really appreciated the chance to work on Value 101 – thank you.
It was such an amazing project, and it’s totally inspired me to create a second e-book (almost like a companion to my first one, which I’m hoping to release at the end of this month) that uses a similar blog-post-interview-collation model to the one you used for Value 101.

Well Stu I’m pretty sure you’ll reach your goals. And I agree that the great majority of bloggers would like to earn their living just by blogging, hopefully not being busy all day on the net but just a couple of hours per day otherwise it would be better a normal job.
I have the goal to earn online enough money so that I can travel around providing my services to those in need without money involved so that everyone can have the chance to have Hypnosis sessions without worrying about payments.
I don’t know when I’ll arrive there but that’s my destination.
Have a great weekend!

Mahalo for your candid post. Some days I have to admit one starts to wonder. I spend hours at my computer writing. Should I be spending my time somewhere else? Yet, I love my writing, and then there are days I’m plagued by it.
I have read John Sherry’s post and it made me think about that decision. I also follow quite a few other people that are shutting things down. It makes me wonder.
After reading your post I realized I have too many of my own blogs and columns. I need to make some decisions. I just need to put my effort into a more concentrated place.
Mahalo for the post.

Hi Jt,
Thank you kindly – I have had the same thoughts as you in the past! I too have wondered, should I be focusing my attentions on earning more money, or on that which I love to do? Finding a balance between the two can be hard.
I wish you the best with these decisions Jt – think long and hard before making a major decision, and then walk with it
Well, as they say Stuart, if anyone can, you can! I’m sad to be hanging up the keyboard but it’s my reality – if you truly see your reality as a successful blog then I say, GO FOR IT MAJOR TIME!! Everything is about our inner belief and awareness from the job we desire to the relationship we feel we deserve. When we know, we can say, ‘GO’ and then make things happen. I happen to think you can make mountains move and shake things right up the best of ways. Stuart to know you is to respect and admire you and I’ve had (and still have) the pleasure of that in bucket loads. I’m going to jog on, you make sure you blog on!!!
